In the latest update, Southwest Airlines confirmed noteworthy changes to ten routes for the first quarter of 2027 (January-March), which surely reflects the current high fuel price. As pointed out by Enilria, which focuses on airline network changes and data analysis, it is unusual for Southwest to make changes to an already-published schedule. And this is what it has just done for multiple routes. For now, at least, three of the markets appear to be entirely removed in early 2027, but others may follow. Southwest Drops Or Suspends These Routes Credit: Allison H. Smith | Shutterstock Seven of the ten markets involve Hawaii (Alaska Airlines and Hawaiian Airlines largely have that market sewn up) and San Diego (from which it has more and more head-to-head competition with Alaska Airlines). Depending on the specific airport pair, the number of flights cut in Q1 2027 will vary from 32% to 93%. The substantial cuts of 93% involve the very short intra-Hawaii operations from Kahului to Kona and Kahului to Lihue. They'll now end on January 5, two months or so sooner than was previously anticipated. As no services are scheduled for other times of the year, it appears that the two links are ending. Southwest has been contacted for comment. Context is necessary. Four of the routes only launched in 2024 or 2026, while most of the ten did not have a lot of flights in the first place. The changes primarily result from having no services in February, which is usually the first or second worst-performing month for airlines. Add in the price of fuel, and it is not surprising that that month, in particular, is mainly affected. The frequency varied from two to six flights a week, with the Boeing 737 MAX 8 obviously used on them all. It was the first time the airport pair had had nonstop service. To maximize connectivity across the US, flights from ITO to LAS operate overnight. In the current month, WN2248 leaves Hawaii at 9:25 PM and gets to Sin City at 5:00 AM local time the next day. Benefiting from the stage length and time zone changes, it is one of five routes from the Aloha State to LAS which have overnight flights on Southwest, joining those from Honolulu, Kahului, Kona, and Lihue. All arrive between 5 AM and 6:05 AM in November, while Honolulu has a daytime operation too. It is the airline's third-shortest route across its entire network. Launched on January 19, 2020, Southwest has nearly always operated daily, with that frequency continuing today. In contrast, Alaska Airlines/Hawaiian's 717s operate three times daily, while Southern Airways Express' Cessnas have two daily flights. In the 12 months to July 2026, the US Department of Transportation shows that 64,324 round-trip passengers were carried, but only 50.2% of seats were filled. Ouch! No wonder the route appears to be ending.
