A fast-moving wildfire destroyed multiple homes in Southern California as hot, gusty weather swept the region on Friday, prompting mandatory evacuations and widespread power outages. Television footage from KTLA showed several residences engulfed in flames in the Orange County community of San Juan Capistrano.Aerial coverage captured emergency crews directing water streams onto two-story suburban homes as fire breached their roofs, sending dense black smoke billowing across backyard swimming pools and tennis courts. The wildfire ignited in the coastal city of San Clemente before quickly moving into San Juan Capistrano. It was one of several blazes fueled by dry, warm northeast Santa Ana winds blowing from Southern California's interior toward the coast. Forecasters warned that the strongest wind gusts would continue through Friday afternoon. The conditions forced local evacuations and left tens of thousands of residents without electricity following precautionary power shutoffs. Both communities are situated near the southern Orange County coast and surrounded by hillsides. San Juan Capistrano, home to 35,000 people, is recognized for its horse trails, while neighboring San Clemente, with a population of 62,000, is known as a "Spanish village by the sea" and attracts beachgoers and surfers. The Orange County Fire Authority confirmed that two evacuation shelters were opened, one in each city, and urged residents subject to evacuation orders to "leave now."A tanker drops retardant on the Peak Fire (AP Photo/Jae C. A heavy plume of dark smoke rose over the ridgelines, visible from surrounding cameras and several miles away. The National Weather Service projected sustained winds of 20 mph to 35 mph (32 kph to 56 kph) on Friday, with peak gusts reaching between 50 mph and 70 mph (80 kph to 112 kph) in certain areas. As humidity levels plummeted, "this will favor a critical fire weather threat," the service stated early Friday.Meanwhile, more than 400 firefighters worked overnight to contain the Bryson Fire, which stood at 250 acres (100 hectares) by Friday morning. The fire department also requested assistance from the state’s office of emergency services."It’s a pretty widespread event of elevated fire weather, so the whole SoCal region should really be on alert," said Rose Schoenfeld, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service.
