So Moderate Democrats Are Just Going to Let MAGA Rig the Midterms, Huh?

3 min readIn case you want to stick this on your fridge to remind you, here is the roster of some Democratic poltroons, none of whom should get a dime of party funds ever again, and all of whom should lose their seniority and whatever chairmanships they might have.Don Davis of North Carolina, Jared Golden of Maine, Marie Gluesenkamp Perez of Washington and Gabe Vasquez of New Mexico, alongside Vicente Gonzalez and Henry Cuellar of Texas and Kathy Castor and Darren Soto of Florida. Not only did these people join with the denizens of the monkey house and vote for an absurd measure "condemning" socialism, they also signed onto a provision supporting the administration's SAVE voter suppression act. This was too much even for the likes of "Problem Solver" Rep. Josh Gottheimer of New Jersey. From Politico:Other centrist Democrats opposed the measure, including Rep. Josh Gottheimer of New Jersey, who railed against the provision expressing support for the SAVE America Act. Joined by fellow moderate Democratic Reps. Hillary Scholten of Michigan, Jared Moskowitz of Florida and Tom Suozzi of New York, Gottheimer sought consideration of an amendment that would have stripped out the elections bill provision—suggesting they would have been willing to condemn socialism without it.“If you really look at it, it’s just the SAVE Act with a wrapper on it,” Gottheimer told reporters Monday. “They’re just running the SAVE Act again, which we’ve already—that’s asked and answered. We’ve been through this play. They’re not actually interested in getting people on the record on whether socialists are part of the Democratic Party.” The amendment was not approved to receive a vote on the House floor. This has been a particularly active week for fellow sell-outs Golden and Gluesenkamp Perez, who also joined with the GOP majority on a key procedural vote that revived much of the Republican agenda that appeared to be dead. Again, from Politico:The two Democrats were decisive in the 210–208 vote, where five Republicans had broken ranks over frustrations with how party leaders had handled an earlier vote on government spending. While House members routinely cross party lines on legislation, it is almost unheard for minority members to break ranks and vote for the “rules” the majority uses to set the floor agenda. Golden and Gluesenkamp Perez are both members of the moderate Blue Dog Democrats, and Golden is not seeking reelection in November. The votes prompted a fierce response Tuesday evening from top House Democratic leaders, who accused the pair in a joint statement of choosing to “blindside the entire House Democratic Caucus” and bailing out Republicans in “a significant breach of trust.”Note to Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries and Democratic Whip Katherine Clark: strong legislative leadership means you don't let the other side "blindside” you on important votes. Nancy Pelosi rarely, if ever, did. That doesn't let the poltroons off the hook, especially Golden, who's walking away from his career of being a pain in the ass to his party caucus. Two months without self-sabotage. That's all they had to do. The Democratic Party never ceases to amaze me.
