Wading carefully through the water, they reached a raft, where fellow personnel held the woman's hand and helped her climb aboard safely.Moments later, the rescuer emerged carrying the sleeping infant wrapped in a cloth. The personnel carefully walked through the water before handing the child to his colleague standing on the raft, who then passed the baby to the woman already on board. The operation highlighted the armed forces' continued rescue efforts as floods affected several parts of Assam.Meanwhile, the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) said that the death toll from this year's floods rose to 78 after three more people died in Sivasagar and Golaghat districts. More than three lakh people continued to be affected across seven districts. The floods have also caused widespread damage to embankments, roads, houses, schools and other public infrastructure in Assam. The ASDMA said over 11,000 animals have been washed away, while another 17,000 livestock have been affected.Even as waters recede in some areas, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms at isolated places across Assam, Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland from July 30 to August 1.- Ends(With inputs from Purna Bikash)Published On: Jul 30, 2026 18:47 IST
