‘Situation Is Changing Dynamically’: Ukraine Says It Holds Tactical Initiative Near Vovchansk

A Ukrainian military spokesperson on Tuesday refused to directly comment on the battlefield situation east of Vovchansk, where much of the fighting is taking place in the gray zone. Viktor Trehubov, spokesperson for the Joint Forces, said the situation is “changing quite dynamically.”JOIN US ON TELEGRAMFollow our coverage of the war on the @Kyivpost_official. “We are currently refraining from actively commenting on this area because most of the operations there involve a struggle for control of the gray zone, and the situation is changing quite dynamically,” Trehubov told Ukrinform. Trehubov was responding to an assessment by the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) that Ukrainian forces had retaken around 10 square kilometers (4 square miles) of wooded terrain east of Vovchansk. He warned that battlefield information can become outdated even before it is publicly reported. “I would wait for a clearer stabilization of the situation,” Trehubov said, adding that he believes Kyiv has gained a tactical upper hand. “After the summer, the Russians have somewhat run out of steam and reduced the intensity of their offensive operations. They have moved on to creative psychotherapy – drawing fantastic maps where they control Bilyi Kolodiaz, Vovchanski Khutory, Polohy and even Kupiansk,” he said. Vovchansk, located in the northern Kharkiv region just south of the Russian border, is a strategically important stronghold. Control of the area gives Russia positions from which to pressure Ukrainian defenses and threaten deeper advances toward the region, while forcing Ukraine to maintain significant forces along its northeastern frontier. Russian forces have repeatedly sought to push Ukrainian troops farther from the border and toward positions from which Kharkiv could come under greater military pressure. The Vovchansk and Kupiansk sectors are also part of interconnected Russian efforts in the Kharkiv region. Russian military planners have sought to establish positions in the region that could facilitate further advances toward Velykyi Burluk and the Oskil River, potentially putting additional pressure on Ukrainian positions farther south. Ukraine’s preferred outcome, Trehubov said, is to push Russian forces back to the international border, which would reduce the threat of infiltration and shelling against territory between the border and Kharkiv. Ukrainian forces repelled four Russian attacks in the Southern Slobozhansky direction on Oct. 5, according to Ukrinform.
