Severe Thunderstorms Across US Midwest Trigger Flood Warnings

The US Midwest and Ohio Valley, including Chicago and Cincinnati, face an enhanced, or level 3, risk of severe thunderstorms. That’s triggered numerous flood warnings and watches from Indiana into western Pennsylvania and Virginia, the National Weather Service said. As of 7 a.m., up to 3 inches (7.6 centimeters) of rain had fallen in parts of Ohio, with police reporting flooding near Fairfield and Hocking counties. New York City is forecast to have a high of 88F (31C) with a 30% chance of showers and thunderstorms after 2 p.m. Tuesday. There is also a coastal flood watch up for parts of southern Queens and Nassau counties, as well as southern Fairfield and Westchester counties due to higher tides than usual. On Monday, across the US, but mainly in the Ohio Valley and Mid-Atlantic, there were 347 filtered storm reports, the Storm Prediction Center said. That included severe hail in a number of places in Ohio, plus widespread reports of wind damage extending to New York, Pennsylvania and Virginia. Thunderstorms and high winds helped cancel 1,401 flights into, out of and around the US on Monday, FlightAware said. La Guardia Airport had 273 flights scrubbed, while O’Hare International Airport near Chicago had 303, and Reagan National Airport had 190.
