Played by CSI: Vegas alum Mandeep Dhillon, Seraphina is the youngest of the Harrigan siblings, though also ostracized by Helen Mirren's Maeve and much of the rest of the family due to her coming from an extramarital affair Pierce Brosnan's Conrad had. Season 1 saw her working as her family's money launderer and agreeing to follow her eldest brother, Daniel Betts' Brendan, into a scheme for a priceless diamond deal in Antwerp, only to narrowly be saved by Tom Hardy's Harry after they were kidnapped and Brendan was brutally killed in front of her. After being teased in the season 1 finale, MobLand season 2 picks up with Seraphina further building her connection to Janet McTeer's Kat, with her ultimate goal to usurp Conrad from the Harrigan family throne, as she believes neither he nor her other brothers, Paddy Considine's Kevin or Anson Boon's Eddie, are hungry or clever enough to carry them forward. However, with Conrad and Kevin already splintering into a potential civil war, and Kat also working with Toby Jones' Colin to take the family down, her efforts may become more complicated as the season progresses. Ahead of its return, ScreenRant's Grant Hermanns interviewed Mandeep Dhillon to discuss MobLand season 2. When asked about Seraphina's mentality coming into the new season of the Guy Ritchie-produced show, Dhillon began by acknowledging that there are moments in the season she found herself wondering, "Seraphina, what are you doing?!" However, she also expressed her excitement at getting to see her character take on an "ambitious" path to fulfill her plans that "could take the Harrigans to the very top": Mandeep Dhillon: She's very smart, she knows exactly how to do it. She doesn't want to play small. She wants everyone to play big, but what does that come with? And that's the question that she's asking herself. And it's a question of, "Is she up for it? Can she do as you saw in episode 1, what is asked of her?" And that's, I think, Seraphina's whole thing this season is asking herself, "What are the lengths that I will go to get what I want, but also to make sure that the Harrigans come out on top?" With the new episodes expected to explore just how far she'll go, that inherently leads to the possibility of some Harrigan family members meeting their end come the season 2 finale. Reflecting on how her MobLand character may feel should some of her family start to die, Dhillon points to the "traumatic" season 1 beat, in which Seraphina watches Brendan murdered with a chainsaw next to her, as opening her eyes to the idea that her family would just be "collateral damage" in her rise to power: Mandeep Dhillon: Which is crazy. What's wild to me is the more and more that I get into Seraphina and her psyche, and the more that I watch her father Conrad do his thing, they're very alike in their need for success and power. They're very, very similar, which is a worry, because we know what he's like. Seraphina & Maeve's Dynamic Will Start To Evolve In Season 2 Luke Varley/Paramount+ ScreenRant: For starters, I was a big Seraphina stan in season 1. I just love how underrated she was in the eyes of the family, but also just how composed and organized she was with everything she did. Before we dive into season 2, did you have a lot of people talk to you in the time since season 1 who were Team Seraphina all the way? "She deserves the Harrigan crown." Mandeep Dhillon: Yeah, yeah, yeah. There's definitely Seraphina fans out there rooting for her, and also there's people that are like, "If she dies, we're gonna riot!" I'm like, "Okay, great, thanks, guys!" [Laughs] But yeah, it's lovely. The love is lovely. ScreenRant: Is there anything you take away from those fan reactions that almost influenced your performance when you went into season 2? Whether it's little mannerisms of hers, or whether it's full-on speeches that she gives to some of her family members, was there anything that you found maybe subtly influenced the way you went into season 2's work? Mandeep Dhillon: No, luckily not. I think it's very different. I think it's important — for me, anyway — to separate the audience's responses or wishes or whatever to what's happening on the page of what I'm reading of Seraphina. So no, she's a different version of herself going into season 2, but that's because of everything she's been through in season 1, as we saw. MovieStillsDB ScreenRant: I feel like Maeve, in particular, might be an obstacle that Seraphina would get over quickly. Mandeep Dhillon: Maeve's always a bloody obstacle. I feel like Maeve's been an obstacle in Seraphina's life forever, and I don't think she plans on changing that, either. [Chuckles] ScreenRant: And that does bring me to my next question. We sort of understand in season 1 why there is that little bit of vitriol between the two, but have you and Helen and Jez had talks about what that timeline of their dynamic has looked like throughout Seraphina's life, and maybe if there's a way that they could try and overcome that in the future? Mandeep Dhillon: I think it would all depend on Maeve. Maeve absolutely despises Seraphina. We understand why, and — I hope this is not a spoiler — but this season, we will understand more. There's a certain someone that we'll meet, and you'll be like, "Oh, okay." But, I can't say too much about that, because I think I'd get in trouble. [Laughs] But yeah, we've definitely spoken about her hate for her, and I just don't think it's going to go anywhere. I feel like Maeve's the type of personality where, even if deep down, she sort of knew, "Oh yeah, Seraphina is right," she would never admit it. She's always gonna have it out for her, because she wants to be No. 1 in Conrad's eyes, and Seraphina is daddy's girl. Mandeep Dhillon: I love it. When I know that we've got a scene, that is so exciting. I go to work so excited to, 1) just go head-to-head with Helen, but also, she's so wonderful to work with that it's such a great time. Even when she's calling me "a b--ch b---ard," it's still fun. [Laughs] And I've got to give it to her. Day one, season 1, the first time we ever worked together, she came up to me, she gave me the biggest hug, and was like, "I don't mean any of it," and I was like, "Helen, bring it on! Come on, bring it on!" And we really have done that, and we have a lot of fun playing the parts. ScreenRant: Another character dynamic I've loved seeing evolve this season is Kat and Seraphina. Obviously, I find it interesting, because part of me expected Seraphina to look towards Kat like a mentor figure, or someone to pull from an example of. But at the same time, we know Seraphina is ambitious to where she'll try and get Kat out as soon as possible. So I'd love to hear both a tease of what that dynamic's going to look like this season, but also what it was like finding that rapport with Janet while you were filming this season. Mandeep Dhillon: I love Janet. I love Janet, and this was the first time that I actually really got to get to know her a bit. It was really fun. She's such a great actress, but also just as a woman, as well. It's like, "You're cool, proper cool." So, that was really nice. It was really nice to bond with her over the table or whatever in between filming. I think it's really important to be able to bond with people off camera, because I do think it really helps your performance, or it helps you to play on the day. I think that's why the characters in MobLand are so alive, because everyone's got such a nice vibe with each other, so we can go there. But with Kat and Seraphina, yeah, you're right, you would have thought that she would be a mentor. But Seraphina is the type of person where she's like, "Yeah, cool, for now. You'll be a mentor for now, but not for long." Seraphina's, again, hungry in the same sense as Conrad is. She's not afraid to step on anyone, use anyone, whatever it's going to take to get to the top. She will do that, and I feel like that is her thoughts going in with Kat.
