Rob Reiner’s ‘killer’ son demands cut of £1.3m family trust after swerving death penalty for ‘murder of parents’

NICK Reiner has demanded a cut of his £1.3million trust fund to buy jail snacks as he awaits trial for the alleged killing of his parents. Now, Reiner’s lawyers are fighting to get him a £416,000 lump sum from a trust set up by his parents for their youngest son, according to PEOPLE. Sign up for the Showbiz newsletter Thank you! They argue that the accused double killer has been unable to buy canteen treats from the prison commissary or hire private defence lawyers. The Nick Reiner Children’s Trust Dated December 2, 1993 was set up by Rob and Michele and named him as its sole beneficiary. At the centre of the battle is an Age-30 Distribution in the trust, that was required to be paid when Reiner turned 30 on September 14, 2023. His lawyers argued that at least £416,000 became payable that day when his parents were alive and he had not been accused of any crime. Reiner’s lawyers have accused former trustee Paul R. Kanin and successor Jodi Pais Montgomery of stonewalling payouts, breaching their duty and draining the fund just to fight him in court. They say Kanin promised in writing to top up Reiner’s commissary account so he could buy basic hygiene items and prison treats, only to flake on the deal. Lawyers Anita P. Wu and Geoffrey A. Neri said: “Nick still has not been able to access even $5 from his trust to buy basic subsistence items from the jail commissary.” They argued that the money should not be subject to California’s Slayer Statute, which can prevent a person from benefiting from a death they unlawfully caused. “The Slayer Statute, the sole remaining basis for withholding this money, takes away what a person receives as a result of someone’s death,” the filing reads. “It does not implicate money that became Nick’s years earlier.” His lawyers claim that current trustee Montgomery is breaching Reiner’s constitutional rights by freezing the cash and also denying him money left by his grandad. Meanwhile, they claim the trustees have splashed over £200,000 of Reiner’s money to cover their own legal fees. A hearing for the dispute is set for October 23. The decision came thanks in part to his parents’ and siblings’ anti-capital punishment views. Prosecutor Nathan Hochman said that the state spoke with Nick’s siblings Jake and Romy Reiner and “they made their views very clear.” “Rob & Michele’s family, despite everything, do not want Nick to get the death penalty, as they insist this horrific incident was the byproduct of a mental health crisis,” an inside source said. Reiner was indicted by a grand jury on August 12 with updated murder charges. The charges replaced the initial ones filed against him in 2025, and included allegations of lying in wait and personally using a knife. Michele, Nick and Rob, who is known for directing Stand By Me, The Princess Bride and When Harry Met Sally, attended a holiday party hosted by comedian Conan O’Brien on December 13. The parents later got into a heated argument with their son, and Romy found them dead inside their Brentwood home on December 14 around 3:30pm PST. Reiner was later arrested, and has maintained his innocence throughout the case. The 33-year-old has a history of mental illness and substance abuse, and has been held inside the Twin Towers jail in California without bail. Comment now
