Our chat with Adam Thomas and his iconic son Teddy is all kinds of adorable

You just never know what’s going to happen.’ (Picture: Shirlaine Forrest/Getty Images) Adam Thomas had an extra special reason to celebrate his latest award; he had his son Teddy right by his side for the big moment. The Waterloo Road favourite was joined by 12-year-old Teddy as he celebrated taking home the Best Drama Star prize at the Inside Soap Awards, which were held in Manchester for the first time. It marked Adam’s second Best Drama Star win for his portrayal of Donte Charles, a character he first began playing as a teenager almost two decades ago. And while the 38-year-old actor was understandably delighted with his victory, Teddy proved to be a particularly proud plus-one. ‘I can’t believe it,’ Adam told Metro after his win. ‘I’m absolutely over the moon because, you know, I’m not really one to win awards, and the fact that I’ve won this means so much. ‘I’m just happy that my son’s here today supporting me. I’m over the moon.’ Asked how proud he was of his dad, Teddy had a very sweet and very definite response: ‘Really proud!’ To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video It’s particularly fitting that Teddy was there to celebrate, given that Waterloo Road has become something of a family affair for the Thomas’. Adam stars as long-running character Donte, while Teddy plays his on-screen son Tommy Charles. Adam’s niece Scarlett Thomas, 17, is also among the cast as Izzy Charles. For Adam, the opportunity to continue playing Donte all these years later is something he doesn’t take for granted. ‘I think he’s just very relatable,’ he said when we asked why the character continues to resonate with viewers. ‘I feel like Donte has been the heart and soul of Waterloo Road, and I’m just very blessed to be able to play an amazing character like him. ‘I was in this show when I think I was 16 years old, and now I’m back again. The fact that I get to go back and play the role of Donte just means so much. ‘I’m just very grateful that I get to go to work and I get to work with my son as well. My son plays my son in it as well, just very blessed.’ The BBC drama has also recently delivered a major blast from Donte’s past, bringing him face-to-face with former headteacher Jack Rimmer, played by Jason Merrells. You just never know what’s going to happen,’ he teased. ‘I didn’t know that was happening, to be honest with you, so I was in more shock than the viewers were. ‘It was a beautiful reunion, having Jack Rimmer and Donte Charles meet again for the very first time at Waterloo Road. It was beautiful.’ The storyline also represented a full-circle moment for Adam and Jason, who have worked together beyond the school gates. ‘I worked with Jason in Waterloo Road when I was first there, and I also worked with him in Emmerdale as well,’ Adam explained. ‘So we went from Waterloo Road to Emmerdale and then back to Waterloo Road. It was a full-circle moment for me.’ Adam, who played Adam Barton in Emmerdale, also credits Waterloo Road with giving him the opportunity to establish himself as an actor when he was still a teenager. ‘When I was 16 years old, when I first joined the show, I hadn’t necessarily really done any work prior to Waterloo Road,’ he recalled. ‘They gave me a chance and a platform to show off what I was capable of. I’ve just got a lot to thank the show for because, without this show, I don’t know where I’d be. Very grateful.’ And could Tommy still be roaming the corridors of Waterloo Road in another 20 years, perhaps this time as a teacher? Teddy certainly thinks so. ‘Oh yes, 100%,’ he declared. We wouldn’t bet against it.
