Recasting The Matrix In 2026: Replacing Keanu Reeves, Carrie-Anne Moss & Laurence Fishburne Custom Image by Joe O'Shea Published Oct 17, 2026, 5:30 PM EDT Karlis has been obsessing over television and movie news since he first learned how to read. He has worked in tech, as a musician, and in journalism with a well-rounded knowledge base of pop-culture throughout the eras. He claims that he has memorized the entire Internet Movie Database, and to date no one has been able to refute this. Holding a Bachelor's Degree in Religion and Culture from Wilfrid Laurier University, Karlis loves to examine the intersections of popular science-fiction and culture. His latest novel MASS. is available now on Amazon and examines a world where obesity has become a federal crime. The Matrix has a fantastic cast, but it is worth considering what stars could play the story's main roles if the film were made today. Considering another Matrix movie is in the works, the franchise's place in cinematic history is far from over, and there is still potential for various characters, including Trinity, Neo, and Morpheus, to appear once again. A recasting of some iconic roles has already occurred once in the franchise's history: The Matrix Revolutions featured a younger Morpheus in Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, as well as a new Agent Smith in Jonathan Groff. Still, these were changes to existing iterations of characters that had already been seen, and their performances were directly influenced by the earlier films. What is more interesting to consider is who could play the roles of Neo, Trinity, and Morpheus in an entirely new canon. With that in mind, this list iterates on some of the earliest plans for the original film, which was considered to star Will Smith as Neo, as well as for Sean Connery to play Morpheus. With that in mind, there is room to consider a very different vision of what The Matrix and its main characters could be. With a great eye for more contemporary stars, there is now the perfect opportunity to build a fantastic and memorable cast for this new version of the film. Alicia Vikander As Trinity Trinity is the emotional core of The Matrix, and needs a powerful and versatile actor. Carrie-Anne Moss was fantastic in the role, bringing incredible combat proficiency to the story, but also adding its emotional heart, which echoed through her love story with Neo. Alicia Vikander is the perfect choice for an updated version of the character. While a few years older than Moss was during filming, Vikander still has the same kind of powerful edge. She has shown strong dramatic skill in films like The Danish Girl, as well as great proficiency for action with movies like Tomb Raider. Vikander has range, seen in projects from Ex Machina to The Wizard of the Kremlin, and has shown a willingness to take on complex and interesting roles in genre stories. Trinity would make sense for her career, and she would make perfect sense for the role. Liam Neeson As Morpheus While Liam Neeson might seem like an odd choice for the leader of the resistance as a 74-year-old Irish white man, it is important to consider earlier plans for the character. Before casting Laurence Fishburne in his late 30s, the nearly 70-year-old Scot Sean Connery was offered the part and turned it down. This kind of patriarch figure would be a very different version of the character, and it would be one that Neeson would be especially well suited for. Commanding and charismatic, Neeson also has a fierce intensity that would suit the character, drawing heavily on his work as R'as al Ghul in Batman Begins. A versatile and powerful actor, Neeson has performed in thrillers and genre works alike, and would be perfectly suited to a role like this. It is easy to imagine him performing the film's iconic dialogue about the red or blue pill and explaining the nature of the Matrix in his powerful, paternalistic voice. Michael B. Jordan As Neo Academy Award winner Michael B. Jordan is a fantastic performer and a great blockbuster star. He is attractive, charismatic, and strong enough of a star to fulfill the central role of The One in the franchise, taking over the role that was popularized by Keanu Reeves in 1999. Jordan already has connections to The Matrix franchise. In 2017, he was planned to star in a reboot of the series written by Zak Penn. While Jordan was intended to play a descendant of Morpheus in that iteration, the actor's strongly relatable humanity would actually make him a better fit for Neo. There are all kinds of actors who could fulfill the main roles of The Matrix, but these three fantastic stars would make an incredible ensemble for a 2026 version of the film. Placing Michael B. Jordan at the center of the story, a new version of the film would be all but guaranteed to work.
