Action shows don't get much bigger than Reacher, as the Prime Video series dominates the streaming charts with every new season. Packed with intense fight sequences, thrilling twists, and constant badass moments from the protagonist, it's no surprise fans keep showing up for this huge hit, which also has plenty of longevity. Each outing is based on one of Lee Child's Jack Reacher novels, and with over 30 to choose from, the show could easily go on for years. As a result, the titular character is always meeting new foes he has to take down, and with Reacher season 5 looking like Prime Video's most ambitious entry yet, we will officially see a major villain switch. So far, the series has featured all kinds of different antagonists. Season 1 centered around a psychotic, narcissistic killer who ran a counterfeit money-laundering operation without much suspicion. Season 2 then upped the ante by introducing a more Hollywood-like villain in charge of a tech company, who acted directly against Reacher and his allies. Then, season 3 featured two main foes — Quinn and Paulie. Quinn was the brains of the operation and was extremely smart, cold, and calculated, all of which was helped by having a powerhouse like Paulie alongside him. Finally, Reacher season 4's twist villains revealed that Lila and Amisha were secret assassins attempting to create and release a deadly toxin. Each of them brought something different to the table, but season 5 may be the most different yet. Similar to season 1, Reacher's next case will require some thorough investigation to find out who the culprit behind the sinister acts he stumbles upon actually is. However, this time, it's not someone hiding in plain sight. The Overarching Villain In Reacher Season 5's Story Is A Nameless Background Character Reacher season 5's story will be a rather uncomfortable watch at times, as it centers around a mysterious group taking advantage of extremely vulnerable people and brutally torturing them to death. The whole conspiracy is dark and unsettling, but rather than being some eccentric villain at the heart of it, the perpetrator is little more than a nameless background character. Make Me — the Jack Reacher novel season 5 is adapting — doesn't even give this overarching antagonist a name, instead referring to him as "The Guy with the Jeans and the Hair." Sure, there are other enemies involved, like Keith Hackett, who is hired to kill Reacher, and Merchenko, a Ukrainian mob boss, yet it's this mysterious background character pulling the strings. Perhaps Prime Video will change a few aspects about him, either making him more prominent throughout the story or actually giving him a name. However, if the adaptation is faithful, then this criminal will be the show's most unique yet and require a masterful performance to pull off convincingly. Every other season has involved some sort of battle, be it directly between Reacher and the key villains, or fighting through goons to get there. Of course, there will still be a hunt for the Guy with the Jeans and Hair, but this final confrontation may feel more unceremonious in contrast, since he'll be so different from other Reacher villains. Rather than feeling like the usual action thriller we're used to, Reacher season 5 is more in line with the horror genre, at least on paper, since its twisted villain will be hiding in the shadows while committing some of the most sinister acts we've seen on the show. Hopefully, this change in direction pays off and gives us our most intriguing antagonist yet. A More Mysterious Villain Could Benefit Reacher In Season 5 Having seen brutes like Paulie, criminal masterminds like Quinn, and powerful CEOs like Langston, opting to include a more mysterious villain in season 5 may be a massive draw for Reacher. Season 1 is still widely regarded as the best outing, which was helped by being a true murder mystery with action elements. It isn't until season 1's finale that we find out the truth about Kilner's involvement, which sets him up as the killer and main antagonist, making it arguably Reacher's most suspenseful storyline. Going back to these roots, but with the added twist that the mysterious criminal isn't a relevant figure, will allow the next installment to really stand out. This route will make audiences far more interested in the antagonist's motivations and seeing him face justice, rather than awaiting the usual big showdown, which has been the case for the past few seasons. Considering Reacher got a lot wrong in season 4, it would be nice to see his investigation skills back on full display next time out. Perhaps his misguided trust and bad hunches will make him more disciplined in the upcoming season, allowing the intellectual side of him to thrive. That's not to say he shouldn't still have plenty of action sequences, since the series does them so well, but a more fleshed-out case full of detective work would be more appealing for season 5. A mysterious foe offers the protagonist the perfect chance to show why he's more than just a resilient brute, and may provide season 1 Reacher vibes. Assuming the show gets this villain and the surrounding case right, season 5 could be the most unique chapter so far, and a perfect environment for our hero to do what he does best.
