Ramayana has its Ram and Ravana. But will Sai Pallavi's Sita get her moment?

While much of the buzz around Nitesh Tiwari's Ramayana has been about Ranbir Kapoor's Ram and Yash's Ravana, Sai Pallavi's Sita is another character to look forward to. Given the kind of roles she has played over the years, it will be interesting to see what she brings to Sita.Nitesh Tiwari's Ramayana is finally set to release on November 5, and the excitement and expectation surrounding the film is understandable. Ranbir Kapoor will be seen as Lord Ram, while Yash takes on the role of Ravana. Both actors have been at the centre of conversations around the film, from their looks to how they will portray two of the most important characters in the epic. But what about Sai Pallavi, who plays Sita? Her casting as Sita is interesting for another reason. She has never really followed the usual formula when it comes to picking her films. And if we look at her career so far, some of her best performances have come from playing women who are not afraid to speak their minds. Take Premam, for instance. As Malar, she didn't have to do much to make people fall in love with her character. Her smile, the way she spoke, and even those little awkward moments made Malar feel like someone you could actually know. In Fidaa, she was quite the opposite. Her Bhanumathi was loud, stubborn and quick to lose her temper. She argued, fought and refused to change herself for anyone. Then there was Gargi, which was a completely different space for her. Sai played a school teacher whose life falls apart after her father is accused of a serious crime. What stood out was how she handled the quieter moments. There were scenes where she looked exhausted, confused or simply didn't know what to do next. You could see what Gargi was going through without her having to explain it.In Amaran, Sai once again had a lot riding on her performance. As Indhu Rebecca Varghese, she brought out the happiness of falling in love, the worries of being married to an Army officer and eventually the pain of losing him. The film may have been about Major Mukund Varadarajan, but Indhu's story stayed with audiences too. Now, with Ramayana, Sai is stepping into a role that millions of people already have a picture of in their minds. Unlike Malar, Bhanumathi or Gargi, Sita is someone audiences have known since childhood. And that makes this role particularly challenging. Sai has shown that she can make people care about the women she plays. The question now is how she will bring her own touch to a character who is already so deeply loved.Sai herself has spoken about how differently she approached this film. During a promotional event, the actor revealed that she would meditate before shooting and pray to Goddess Sita to guide her performance. She also said that she considered the opportunity a blessing rather than just another role in her career.More recently, during an appearance on Kaun Banega Crorepati, Sai explained that instead of thinking about what she could give to the character, she wondered what she could learn from playing Sita. The makers, too, appear keen to explore more than the familiar image of Sita. Nitesh Tiwari recently revealed that Sai Pallavi will have action sequences in the film, inspired by the Adbhuta Ramayana, which portrays Sita as a warrior. This is something we haven't seen much in earlier adaptations of the Ramayana, where Sita has mostly been portrayed as a woman who sacrifices for her family. But does Sita need to be seen picking up a weapon and fighting a battle for audiences to recognise her strength? Think about the time she spent in Lanka. She was alone, away from Ram and her family, yet Ravana could never convince her to accept him. There is a lot about Sita that can be explored without necessarily showing her fighting a battle. It now depends on how Nitesh Tiwari chooses to tell her story. For Sai Pallavi, Ramayana is easily among the biggest films of her career. She is already a familiar name in Tamil, Telugu and Malayalam cinema, but this film brings a different kind of attention. Playing Sita also means dealing with comparisons. Many viewers still remember Dipika Chikhlia from Ramanand Sagar's Ramayan, and that image has stayed with them for decades. Sai now has the task of playing the same character for a new generation, while also convincing those who have grown up watching the older version.Of course, the film will have its big moments involving Ram and Ravana, and understandably so. But Sita's story should not get lost between the two. After all, her choices, her relationship with Ram and her time in Lanka are central to the events that unfold. As Ramayana prepares for its theatrical release, the question isn't whether Sai Pallavi can look convincing as Sita. It is whether the film will give her enough room to show the many sides of the character.Ranbir Kapoor and Yash may be getting much of the attention right now. But it would be interesting if, after watching the film, audiences have just as much to say about Sai Pallavi.- Ends
