Rahul Gandhi goes to SC against CBI probe order on disproportionate asset claims

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has approached the Supreme Court challenging orders passed by the Allahabad High Court in a case over the allegations that he holds assets disproportionate to his income.Gandhi has challenged the High Court's directions to the CBI and the Enforcement Directorate (ED) to verify allegations raised by Karnataka-based BJP worker Vignesh Shishir.In an order passed in May, the Allahabad High Court directed that the allegations in the complaint against the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha be verified in accordance with law.The High Court had observed that if the complaint had been received, the allegations could be verified as per law. It also said that the CBI or ED could take appropriate steps permissible under the law. "It is expected that if the complaint of the petitioner has been received, the allegations of the complaints may be verified as per law. It is needless to say that the CBI or ED may take appropriate steps which are permissible under the law," the High Court had said.The court subsequently directed the agencies to apprise it of the progress made in the matter. In its subsequent order dated July 20, the High Court expressed dissatisfaction with the affidavit filed by the CBI, observing that it was not in accordance with its earlier direction. The court, however, noted that the ED had taken the required steps.The High Court further said that the ED could take necessary legal action if it received any information during the course of its investigation. The matter was then posted for further consideration on August 20.Gandhi has now challenged the High Court's orders before the Supreme Court. He has also filed a separate transfer petition seeking to shift the matter from the Allahabad High Court to the Delhi High Court.Both petitions were filed before the Supreme Court on August 7.
