But for a daily wage worker, it can mean losing a livelihood. That reality was brought into sharp focus by a Reddit post titled "Life is unfair," in which a man recounted meeting a distraught porter in Pune who had lost the phone he depended on for work.On the r/Pune subreddit, the man said that he was approached by the visibly distressed porter near his office. The porter said his phone had slipped out of his pocket and asked if he could use the man’s phone to call it.Unsure whether it was a scam, the man first requested a shopkeeper in the vicinity to help. He tried calling the number several times, but most calls got disconnected, while one rang unanswered. Since the shopkeeper's phone had a faulty speaker, the man eventually decided to place the call from his own phone. After a few unsuccessful attempts, someone finally answered. The porter immediately took the phone from the man and pleaded, "Please give me my phone back. I work as a porter. My livelihood depends on it. I'll be in big trouble if I lose it."The call disconnected moments later. What followed left the man shaken. The porter broke down in tears, unable to control his emotions.Reflecting on the encounter, the man wrote in his Reddit post that while losing a phone may be little more than an inconvenience for many, it can mean losing one's livelihood, contacts, income and sense of security for someone living hand-to-mouth."I truly hope he gets his phone back. Whoever has it, I hope they find it in their heart to return it. May God bless him," the man said.Read the post here:In the comments section of the Reddit post, several users rallied behind the porter, expressing sympathy for his plight.Someone said they were willing to donate a spare smartphone to the porter if he could be found, hoping it would at least help him get back on his feet despite the hassle of recovering his SIM card and accounts.Others lamented the incident, with one saying, "May he get his phone back. No one deserves to lose their livelihood like that."Another user remarked that "morality and integrity has left our country,” while one of them also hoped the porter would see better days soon, saying their heart went out to daily wage workers who toil every day just to make ends meet.- EndsPublished On: Jul 30, 2026 17:05 IST
