Premier League’s most overconfident fans revealed with Arsenal, Man Utd and Chelsea supporters relishing new season

The study combined a YouGov survey of fans who were asked whether they were backing their team to win the title and Betfair’s Prediction Index. And the data has revealed that it is followers of defending champions Arsenal who have the most confidence in their team winning back-to-back titles for the first time in the Premier League era. The Gunners appear to have had a strong summer by adding Bruno Guimaraes to an already intimidating midfield, while Christos Tzolis could be one of the bargains of the window at £34million. That has, perhaps rightly, filled Gooners with sky-high confidence, so much so that 72 per cent of them are backing Mikel Arteta‘s side to win again, outstretching Betfair’s prediction by 29 per cent – with the North Londoners given a 43 per cent shot at glory. Manchester United and Manchester City are both equally overconfident compared to their title odds. Just under half of City fans, 47 per cent, reckon Enzo Maresca can lead them to title glory this season, but their odds of 21 per cent mean they are overconfident by 26 per cent. Chelsea are third in the rankings at 16 per cent overconfidence. Their one game a week schedule and Xabi Alonso at the helm has given 26 per cent of their fanbase hope they will lift the title, from 10 per cent Betfair odds of doing so. Liverpool and Leeds are both fourth at 13 per cent overconfidence. The Reds won the title only two years ago and with a new manager in Andoni Iraola could be a threat this season if they can manage without Mohamed Salah. Leeds only returned to the top flight last season, and Betfair odds give them just a 0.2 per cent chance of winning the title, compared with a head-scratching 13 per cent of the Whites fanbase. In fifth is Tottenham, who like Chelsea have only one game a week to worry about and have splashed the big bucks to improve their midfield and defence. Betfair Predicts gives them a three per cent chance at winning the title, while 15 per cent of their fans believe they could be crowned English champions for the first time in the Premier League era.
