Philomena Cunk has launched a Letterboxd account ahead of new series Cunk On Cinema. The Diane Morgan character originally appeared as a segment Charlie Brooker’s Weekly Wipe before going it alone in a run of satirical mockumentaries including 2018’s Cunk On Britain, 2022’s Cunk On Earth and Cunk On Life, which was released in 2024. Earlier this year it was announced that Cunk would be taking on the world of Hollywood with Cunk On Cinema. “The three-part series will uncover the invention of the camera, to the New Wave filmmakers of the 60s, right up to the entrance of CGI and what the future of AI holds,” reads an official description. “Cunk will attempt to demystify it all while sitting in lumpy seats with stale popcorn, asking herself where did cinema come from? And why? What does it want? And why can’t it tell us?” Hollywood icons such as Michael Bay and Benedict Cumberbatch have also been confirmed to appear in the series. Cunk On Cinema will be available to stream next week (November 12) via BBC iPlayer and Netflix and ahead of the new series, Morgan’s Philomena Cunk has set up her own Letterboxd account to share reviews of classic movies. “Done a show about cinema so the producers made me set this up for PR reasons. They’re literally watching me type this now,” reads her Letterboxd bio. She’s panned 1973’s Wicker Man and 1988’s Rain Man as “disappointing superhero” films and isn’t a fan of 2013’s Thor: The Dark World because the movie was so dark, she “couldn’t see” anything. The original 2008 Iron Man fared slightly better. “Derren Brown bloke dresses up as a toaster,” she wrote in a three-star review. Elsewhere, she described Dune as “the best film about sand since Star Wars: A New Hope” while The Odyssey is her favourite film of the year. “It’s a man film about men. Also very brown (see Dune). Some men are inside a horse and then there’s a film. I saw it in IMAX, ‘cos [her mate] Paul insisted. No idea what happened. It was too big. Paul kept shouting, and when Matt Damon killed everyone, he took his trousers off and burst into tears. I ate more Revels than I’ve ever eat before, and was sick in my lap. Think the chocolate packets must be bigger at IMAX.” Speaking to NME in 2018, Morgan revealed that the secret behind the character’s successful is her inability to be flustered. “Staying in character isn’t difficult for me,” she said. “I enjoy being Philomena and actually feel more comfy as her than me because she’s totally bulletproof. She doesn’t care what anyone thinks about her.”Recommended Philomena Cunk is still adding reviews to her Letterboxd account – check them out here.
