Paul Finebaum didn’t mince words when it came to Steve Sarkisian and Texas getting a massive win over Ole Miss over the weekend. In fact, Finebaum called it Sarkisian’s biggest win so far, given the context of this season. It would’ve been Texas’ third loss, almost eliminating them from College Football Playoff contention. However, they broke a two-game losing streak, Arch Manning played better under center, and the Longhorns are suddenly back in the national conversation. $19.99 gets you a FULL year of On3 | Rivals national coverage “I think it’s the biggest win he’s had, and that’s saying that for a guy that’s already been to two national semifinals, who’s beaten Alabama in Tuscaloosa, and has had some massive days on the 40 acres,” Finebaum said on McElroy and Cubelic. “But I mean, you just had to stop the bleeding, and they did, and there will be massive debates today about what type of game Arch played. It really doesn’t matter to me. They won the game. They looked really good at times and really terrible at times, but so did Ole Miss. “And I mean, I think the argument now is going to become what can Texas do with the rest of the schedule. Let’s say they lose one more time at LSU. Is that going to be enough of the conversation piece for them to get in? Last year they didn’t have an argument because of the Florida loss. This year I think they will have an argument based on the absolute carnage in college football and their resume. If they can get some help from Ohio State, from Ole Miss, from Tennessee, they didn’t Saturday with Tennessee. Then you know maybe they can be on that cut line and get in. But I think they’re certainly a worthy team, even at 9-3.” Sarkisian and Texas knew they had to have the 34-27 win over Ole Miss. If they lost their third straight game this weekend, perhaps massive changes would be on the horizon. “Let me be the first to tell you. We were not perfect tonight, by any means,” Sarkisian said postgame. “We had an opportunity to be closer to perfect, but we get sack fumbled. They get a touchdown. They get momentum. We got 14 penalties for 134 yards. We’re 3 of 13 on third down. “So there’s things in the game that we need to come back and we need to fix. Okay, but I’m proud of our team, but I know there’s even better out there for us, and there’s going to need to be better coming from us as we move forward in our conference.” It’s a win and Texas is now 5-2 on the year. The schedule doesn’t lighten up though as they have quality opponents in Mississippi State, Missouri, LSU, Arkansas and Texas A&M remaining.
