The idea is simple: instead of OpenAI deciding which scientific problems matter, it wants researchers to use these tools to chase the questions they already know best.OpenAI CEO Sam Altman wrote on X, "So excited for this. Very close to models that will significantly accelerate scientific discovery; the best way to do this is for us to empower scientists, not to try to figure out everything ourselves. We all deserve the benefits."How this actually worksThe rollout is happening in stages. OpenAI is starting with 10,000 researchers this summer, with institutions like the Institute for Advanced Study and cole normale suprieure already onboard, before scaling up to the full 100,000 researchers by 2027. Each participant gets access to OpenAI's frontier models, including GPT-5.6 Sol Pro, and can bring along up to four collaborators from their own institution.Researchers won't just be typing questions into a chatbot either. They'll get access to more than 75 specialised life science skills covering genetics, genomics, protein modelling, and drug discovery, along with tools that connect to scientific literature, genomic databases, satellite imagery, and computational notebooks. Codex, OpenAI's coding-focused model, is also part of the package, helping researchers write code, debug it, and analyse datasets. On top of that, there's support for the less glamorous side of academia too, things like grant writing, literature reviews, and drafting manuscripts.To put some numbers behind the ambition, OpenAI says GPT-5.6 Sol scores 83 per cent on FrontierMath Tier 4, a benchmark for research-level mathematical reasoning, up from 72.5 per cent with the previous model. On GeneBench Pro, which tests complex biological data analysis, the model solves just over 31 per cent of tasks. OpenAI is also throwing in training sessions and hands-on support, so researchers who've never touched an AI tool before aren't left fumbling around on their own.Applications are open now for eligible degree-granting institutions with a solid research track record, and the whole initiative is part of a broader $250 million commitment OpenAI has made toward supporting scientific research through 2027, alongside efforts like its NextGenAI initiative and a partnership with the US Department of Energy's Genesis Mission.- EndsPublished On: Jul 30, 2026 11:59 IST
