Not just because a game on that scale can function on the console, but because of the port’s comparatively small file size versus other platforms. The remaster’s Switch 2 store page confirms that it’s just 58.7GB. On the surface, that’s pretty big for a Nintendo game. Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment remains the biggest first-party release on Switch 2 at just 44.9GB. However, when compared to other third-party ports on Switch 2 and, more importantly, Oblivion’s file size on other platforms, it’s tiny. Whether you’re playing Oblivion Remastered on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, or PC, you’re going to need more than twice as much free space before you can install the game. At least 119GB on PlayStation, slightly more than that on Xbox, and as much as 125GB if you want to play the remaster on PC. Bethesda Some of the other third-party games to come to Switch 2 have not compromised on size, at least not to the same extent as the team working on the Oblivion port. Final Fantasy 14, which arrived on Switch 2 last week, set a new record for the biggest file size on the platform, weighing in at 117GB. That’s almost half of what the console can hold at any one time. Trimming Oblivion's File Size Was Important For Its Physical Release There is a very important reason why the Oblivion devs wanted to get the remaster’s file size down to under 64GB on Switch 2. It’s because that’s the number a game needs to limbo under if the developers want to be able to squeeze the whole thing on a single card. In the wake of physical games potentially going away forever, directors who worked on the port explained to Nintendo Life why it was important to them to do Oblivion’s physical Switch 2 release the right way. “I’m a big proponent of physical media and preservation. So it means a lot to me. The team got it working and slid it right in under the wire as far as the storage limit,” says associate art director Dan Lee. Studio director Tom Mustaine added, “The physical cart thing was really important to all of us. That’s a huge victory to be able to get the whole game up and scale at this upgraded resolution of visual fidelity on cart." That last part is the most important part of all, and since these are still very early days for Oblivion on Switch 2, we don’t yet know just how good the game looks and runs on the console. Compromises will have been made to squeeze the whole game onto a 64GB card. Whether those compromises will leave those playing on Switch 2 feeling let down will become clearer in the coming days.
