Far Cry 3 propelled the series to new heights and helped make Ubisoft the household name that it is today. It's a remarkable achievement, sporting one of the greatest video game villains of all time, a stunning world stuffed with an abundance of busywork, and first-person gunplay that feels as revolutionary today as it did back in 2012. Its influence on the industry was significant, and while many of its innovations have since been abandoned (justifiably so) one cannot deny how ahead of the curve Far Cry 3 was when it came to open-world design and first-person shooter combat. However, not everyone loves it quite so much, with its noticeable shortcomings being felt even in the recent Far Cry 3 next-gen update that attempts to modernize the whole experience. Fortunately, that's where Far Cry 3: Project Medusa comes in, as it is designed to introduce a bevy of new content in an attempt to faithfully recreate what should have been and restore Ubisoft's magnum opus to its rightful state. It's a huge undertaking, one that fans have been understandably very excited about, and it just got a huge gameplay reveal. When it comes to Far Cry 3, there is a lot that could be changed in order to make the package feel a tad more modern. While not every aspect of what many consider to be Ubisoft's greatest game is completely antiquated, there are a few elements, such as its reliance on clearing towers and repetitive side content, that could be ironed out in order to better elevate what still works. However, while Far Cry 3: Project Medusa is rectifying some of the base game, it is actually reverting it back to an even more antiquated state, at least technically. The incredibly ambitious Far Cry 3: Project Medusa is a fan-made mod from prolific modder Scar, and is designed to ostensibly revert the game to its pre-launch state. It is based on the versions showcased by Ubisoft in the lead up to the game's launch, versions that were changed in minor and occasionally major ways by the time the finished product shipped. Elements like Jason's model, the game's vegetation, lighting, UI, and much more were altered, and Project Medusa aims to restore it all. In many ways, Project Medusa is a form of preservation, except it is for a version of a game that, at least publically, never existed. One may question why such a version should exist, but, it is, in many ways, an improvement over what we ended up getting, as proven by the game's recent gameplay showcase. While it only shows off a work in progress, and cuts quickly between a variety of settings and missions, it is clear that the changes to the game's visuals, sound effects, UI, and more have made a big impact on the core game. Sure, the gameplay of Far Cry 3 remains completely intact, but the mere tweaking of vegetation or the revamped UI have noticeable consequences on the overall feel and, dare I say, vibes of the game. Project Medusa doesn't currently have a release date, although its creator's official YouTube channel is being frequently updated. For fans of Far Cry 3 who want to see it in a whole new (or old, depending on how you look at it) light, Project Medusa will be one to keep your eye on.
