The decision marks another significant step towards the development of next-generation hybrid-electric commercial aircraft. The initiative aims to develop and validate an integrated hybrid-electric energy architecture that could improve aircraft efficiency, reduce emissions and support the aviation industry’s long-term decarbonization goals. Integrating high-voltage electrical systems The LEIA project focuses on integrating high-voltage electrical systems that power non-propulsive aircraft functions, including environmental control, avionics and other onboard equipment. By optimizing how energy is generated, distributed and managed across the aircraft, Airbus and its partners seek to reduce the amount of power extracted from conventional engines, thereby improving fuel efficiency while lowering overall system weight.“Our progress in developing hybrid-electric technologies and our move into the LEIA demonstrator marks a pivotal shift in how we design the future of flight,” said Karim Mokaddem, Head of aircraft of tomorrow Research and Technology at Airbus. “By moving to integrated, intelligent hybrid-electric architectures, we are actively laying the physical and digital foundation for the next generation of aircraft. This evolution demonstrates that the future of aviation is about more than just new power sources; it is also about the new ecosystems that will manage them.” Multiple electrical technologies can operate together LEIA builds upon the achievements of the earlier SWITCH programme, which concentrated on hybrid-electric powertrain subsystems. The previous project reached an important milestone when Collins Aerospace successfully completed integrated laboratory testing alongside partners Pratt & Whitney, GKN Aerospace and MTU Aero Engines. The new initiative expands that work by demonstrating how multiple electrical technologies can operate together within a complete aircraft energy architecture.The programme brings together a broad international consortium from Europe, the United Kingdom and the United States. Key participants include AVL, Collins Aerospace, Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft, Liebherr Aerospace, Lynxeo, the Netherlands Aerospace Centre, Safran, SAFT, the University of Warwick, Wroclaw University of Science and Technology and the European Aerospace Science Network. The collaborative effort combines expertise in electrical systems, energy storage, power electronics and aircraft integration.A central objective of the project is to demonstrate a ground-based integrated test platform capable of validating high-voltage hybrid-electric technologies before they are introduced into future aircraft. The demonstrator will evaluate power distribution, energy conversion, thermal management and system reliability under realistic operating conditions, helping accelerate the maturity of hybrid-electric aviation technologies.Hybrid-electric technologies are expected to play an increasingly important role in reducing aviation’s environmental footprint, particularly for future short- and medium-range aircraft. While they are unlikely to replace conventional propulsion entirely in the near term, they can significantly improve energy efficiency by supporting onboard electrical systems and reducing engine workload. Airbus considers such innovations an important part of its wider strategy to achieve more sustainable air transport alongside sustainable aviation fuel, hydrogen-powered aircraft and advanced aerodynamic technologies.The launch of LEIA reinforces Airbus’ commitment to collaborative research aimed at transforming commercial aviation.
