Newly-crowned world champion Mark Chamberlain ready to fight at 20,000-capacity former Premier League stadium

MARK CHAMBERLAIN could fulfil his dream of defending his world title at Portsmouth’s 20,000-capacity Fratton Park after the club opened the door to hosting a blockbuster fight night. The newly-crowned IBO super-lightweight champion stunned Pierce O’Leary in Dublin on Saturday, climbing off the canvas before producing a dramatic late stoppage to claim the biggest win of his career. Speaking after the fight, Chamberlain revealed promoter Frank Warren had already discussed activating a rematch clause. Sign up for the Sport newsletter Thank you! He said: “Frank said in there there’s the rematch. No problem! But he’s going to have to dig deep in his pockets, and I want it on my terms at home.” That dream may now be a step closer after Portsmouth chief executive Andy Cullen confirmed the club would be willing to explore staging the fight at Fratton Park. According to the Portsmouth News, Cullen said the Blues would be open to discussions, although any event would need to fit around the football calendar and secure the necessary licences. He said: “I certainly wouldn’t rule it out because one of the reasons that we put a new pitch down is that we can host different events.” Cullen also revealed he has previous experience of staging boxing at a football stadium after helping bring Jon Thaxton’s title fight to Norwich City’s Carrow Road in 2005. He added: “It’s certainly something we would be able to discuss with all the relevant parties.
