NEWCASTLE fans have been left fuming after top transfer target Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg REJECTED a move to St James’ Park. The Magpies had made the Marseille midfielder a priority as they desperately look to rebuild following a turbulent summer on Tyneside. Newcastle were reportedly prepared to meet Marseille’s demands for the 31-year-old former Tottenham star, only for the Denmark international to turn down their proposal. One fan raged: “I was never convinced with his signing but him actually turning us down is a new low #NUFC.” Another supporter wrote: “Getting rejected by Hojbjerg is a new low. I’m just gutted I can’t bet on him to get a yellow card every week.” While a third added: “Last thing we want is to have a player like him on an expensive long-term deal. He’s not worth it.” The latest setback comes after Newcastle already lost Anthony Gordon to Barcelona and Sandro Tonali to Tottenham, with the latter’s departure bringing in the second-highest transfer fee in the club’s history. Captain Bruno Guimaraes has since also departed for Arsenal, leaving a sizeable hole in the middle of the park which Newcastle had hoped Hojbjerg could help fill. There have been arrivals too, with the likes of goalkeeper Ewen Jaouen, winger Bazoumana Toure and midfielder Sean Steur, but Hojbjerg’s snub represents another frustrating blow as Newcastle attempt to reshape their squad. Jaissle now faces a race to strengthen his options before the transfer window closes, with Newcastle’s Premier League campaign beginning against Liverpool on August 23. Comment now
