New US test lab simulates real-world conditions for hypersonic missile systems

U.S. aerospace and defense company Moog has expanded its facility in Huntsville, Alabama, with a secure Hardware-in-the-Loop (HWIL) laboratory for testing missile and hypersonic flight control systems. Unveiled during an open house held alongside the Space and Missile Defense Symposium, the lab uses physical hardware and simulated environmental forces to validate systems before flight testing. Moog said the facility is one of only a few HWIL laboratories in the U.S. capable of testing a hypersonic vehicle’s flight control system under real-world environmental conditions in a multidomain environment. The company expects the capability to shorten development cycles, reduce program risks, and support mission readiness for U.S. defense and space customers. Physical hardware meets simulated flight conditions Hardware-in-the-loop testing connects actual system components to a simulated operating environment. This allows engineers to examine how physical flight-control hardware responds to conditions that a hypersonic vehicle could encounter during a mission. The Huntsville lab is equipped with a custom active load stand developed by Moog. The system can apply representative forces to physical components as part of a simulated hypersonic mission, allowing engineers to evaluate their behavior without immediately moving to a full-scale flight test. “Moog has quietly assembled the technical breadth and depth necessary to solve our warfighters’ toughest problems in many emerging platforms; this HWIL is our demonstration to the end-customer that we are doing more ‘Speed of Relevance’ to prove out capabilities before costly flight testing,” said Greg Semrau, Moog Space Division Technical Director. Huntsville site becomes an engineering hub The expanded facility will serve as a hub for systems engineering, integration, testing, program development, and customer collaboration. Its location in Huntsville, a major U.S. center for missile development and defense programs, supports this focus. The site is also intended to bring Moog’s engineers closer to government stakeholders, industry partners, and customers working on next-generation defense and space systems. “We are thrilled to host local North Alabama leadership, along with government and industry partners, to show our continued commitment to growing our business in the region,” said Julia Stoll, Moog Huntsville General Manager. “The open house provides a unique opportunity for guests to experience firsthand innovative solutions and advanced technologies being developed and tested at our facility. “We are proud to share how Moog is contributing to the future of defense and space while expanding our presence in Huntsville,” he added. Defense and space hardware goes on display Moog marked the expansion with a ribbon-cutting ceremony and an open house. Visitors toured the facility, met senior leaders from the company’s Space and Defense divisions, and watched a hypersonic vehicle mission demonstration. The event also showcased several systems from Moog’s defense and space portfolio. These included the Reconfigurable Integrated-weapons Platform turret, known as RIwP, the Specialized Quad Rail Launcher, and the Meteorite High-Capacity Space Vehicle. Together with the new HWIL lab, the systems demonstrated the range of hardware being developed and tested at the Huntsville site.
