New PS5 game has the most trophies of any PlayStation title ever

Trust us, you won’t guess what it could be (Sony) A Chinese-developed daughter-raising simulator has only just made the leap to PlayStation 5, and it comes with the highest trophy count of any game on the platform. There have been debates over the years on whether PlayStation trophies and Xbox achievements are a good thing or not, but they’ve become so ingrained in their respective ecosystems that it’s hard to imagine modern gaming without them. Many people enjoy being given a checklist of objectives and earning every trophy can make you feel like you’ve completely mastered a video game; something that can be bragged about with friends. Some games, though, have so many trophies it can become overwhelming and a new PlayStation 5 release looks to have broken the record for most trophies in any PlayStation game, at a whopping 236. The game in question is Volcano Princess, which comes from Chinese developer Egg Hatcher and is billed as a daughter-raising simulator (which is apparently an actual genre in China) where you play as a recently widowed father, though it has some dungeon-crawling and role-playing elements too, based on the trailer. It actually launched back in 2023 for PC but was ported to Xbox Series X/S last year, where it boasts 100 achievements to unlock. For whatever reason, the PlayStation 5 version has more than doubled that amount, according to PSNProfiles. All but one of the trophies are rated bronze, which are considered the easiest type to unlock. The one exception is the platinum you earn from unlocking every other trophy. Based on a quick skim, it seems all these trophies can be acquired naturally while playing the game, such as earning a certain amount of gold or completing specific activities a set number of times. This makes 100% completion sound less arduous than it might have been, but it’d still be quite the time sink, since some trophies are tied to romance routes and different endings, thus requiring multiple playthroughs. Regardless, no other PlayStation 5 game has this many trophies… or at least no base game does. If you look at PSNProfile’s list of games, you’ll find some games with much higher trophy counts but that’s because they’re either compilations that include multiple games (such as Tomb Raider I-III Remastered) or have separate trophy counts for DLC and expansions. Age Of Empires 2: Definitive Edition, for example, only has 71 trophies, but when you include its 11 DLC packs, that total balloons to 358. Nothing compares, though, to Train Sim World 2, which has a staggering 411 trophies thanks to its 48 DLC expansions. As such, it’s very easy for Volcano Princess’ record to be overlooked. There doesn’t even seem to be an official Guinness World Record for the video game with the most trophies on PlayStation, probably because there’s an Xbox game with an even higher number of achievements. That game is the Xbox One version of Halo: The Master Chief Collection, which the Guinness World Records website credits has having the most achievements in an Xbox video game, at exactly 600 – but that’s by virtue of consisting of multiple games and receiving post-launch DLC, so it’s arguable as to whether it really counts. Rare Replay has 200 achievements, which is the most of any single Xbox title, although it’s still a compilation of multiple retro titles.
