Netflix shock as popular drama is canceled after five seasons and replacement show is revealed

Sweet Magnolias, which was based on the novels by Sheryl Woods, follows three life-long best friends – Maddie, Dana Sue, and Helen – living in the charming fictional town of Serenity, South Carolina. While the much-loved series hasn’t been renewed for another season, Netflix have greenlighted a new drama series from Sweet Magnolias‘ executive producer and showrunner Sheryl J. Anderson. JoAnna Garcia Swisher is rumoured to be executive producing and starring in the series. The new drama, Ladies of the House, will follow a widow and her two adult daughters as they battle each other, their extended family and the men in their lives while simultaneously running the winery they’ve been left. Ladies of the House is said the be heating up and ready to go with a source telling Deadline it came down to renewing Sweet Magnolias for a sixth season or greenlighting the new show. It seems Netflix went for the latter option after the decision reportedly ran down to the wire. Most read in TV The source explained that Netflix bosses allowed the actor’s contracts on Sweet Magnolias to run out at the last minute and they replaced it with a new show featuring the same creator and star. Sweet Magnolias has been left on multiple cliffhangers with fans surely hoping Annie and Ty would have reconciled. The axing comes after Netflix didn’t commission a Season 6 writer’s room ahead of time the way it typically does for long-running shows. One fan said on Reddit: “Five seasons feels like a solid run, but ending it still hurts when the cast had that much chemistry.” Another fan wrote: “Sounds like they’re making the same show?” A third fan penned: “I can’t believe it!!!” Meanwhile, a fourth fan fumed: “Ffs I’m done with Netflix.” Comment now
