After all, Fillion is well-known in the sci-fi genre for having played Captain Malcolm "Mal" Reynolds in the short-lived Firefly, which has since become a cult classic with an animated sequel series on the way, and the space western's follow-up movie, Serenity. While Firefly explored a different side of the galaxy compared to Star Trek, visiting the kind of worlds and interacting with characters that the crew of the USS Enterprise might not have paid attention to, Fillion showed his credentials for Kirk. In Firefly, Fillion made Mal someone his crew looked up to but also felt part of a family, not a leader on a pedestal, which is similar to Kirk's position. Additionally, both are charismatic characters that use humor well. That said, Shatner's Kirk comes from a more confident and optimistic place, whereas Fillion's Mal uses his sarcasm as an answer to deep-set trauma. Finally, Fillion does not only love the sci-fi genre, but he is a major Star Trek fan. Speaking to Collider at this year's San Diego Comic-Con, Fillion claimed that Star Trek was his favorite sci-fi universe. Nathan Fillion As Captain Kirk Could Be What Unlocks Star Trek's Movie Future Despite multiple attempts over the years, it seems like Abrams' Star Trek movies are dead. As such, Fillion being cast as Captain Kirk in live-action after this recent event to celebrate the franchise's history would be perfect for the space opera universe's future. Sure, Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley are said to be working on a new Star Trek movie, but the best future for the sci-fi franchise on the big screen would be to continue on the Kelvin Timeline. Without Pine and the rest of the movies' original cast, the perfect way to do it would be with a time jump. Fillion is perfect to play Captain Kirk and is nine years older than Pine. With some makeup to make him look a bit older than he is, Paramount could easily resurrect the Star Trek movie franchise with a time jump to a couple of decades after 2016's Star Trek: Beyond. Through that, the reboot would keep the beloved continuity while also allowing the universe and its characters to change in exciting ways when the audience was not watching.
