A PC port that uses the decompilation is being tested (a public release is unclear, but it's likely coming soon). GoldenEye 007 helped shape console FPS multiplayer. Hopefully, mods modernize its awkward N64 controls. The latest in a growing line of decompiled retro games is Nintendo 64 first-person shooter classic, GoldenEye 007. The roughly half-decade-long project led by KholdFuzion recently hit 100% on its GitHub decompilation status page, opening up the possibility of ports to various platforms and feature-rich mods, all running on the original N64 game's code (via Tom's Hardware). A PC port that utilizes the decompilation code is currently being tested. It's unclear when the port will release publicly, but if it's already being tested, it'll likely drop relatively soon. Rare's GoldenEye 007, which dropped back in 1997, is one of the most influential games in history. It arguably established the FPS genre on consoles thanks to its four-player split-screen multiplayer. Before GoldenEye 007's release, PC was the dominant platform for FPS games, with titles like Wolfenstein 3D, Doom, and Quake defining the genre. It's likely that if it weren't for GoldenEye 007, as janky as it is by modern standards, we never would have gotten first-person shooter mainstay series like like Halo and Call of Duty. This isn't the first GoldenEye 007 recompilation project out there A recompilation of an unreleased Xbox 360 port dropped a few months ago This isn't the first time we've heard about a GoldenEye 007 recompilation effort either. A few months ago, the game's canceled Xbox 360 remaster got a fully functional PC port with better textures and a higher frame rate and resolution. However, for this recompilation to work, you need a copy of the leaked, unreleased title — if you know where to look, it's not that difficult to find. While I have fond memories of playing GoldenEye 007 multiplayer with my friends, the game doesn't feature the twin-stick controls most of us are familiar with in first-person shooters. Instead, title uses the N64 gamepad's C-Buttons and a somewhat awkward manual aiming system. Hopefully, whenever the GoldenEye 007 recompilation makes its way to platforms like PC and Android, modders modernize the game's somewhat awkward control scheme. A remastered version of GoldenEye 007 is playable on the Switch and Switch 2 with Nintendo's Switch Online + Expansion Pak subscription. The same remaster is also available on Xbox consoles. In recompilation/decompilation-related news, a port of Pokémon Red and Blue landed a few weeks ago, though it's not really a recompilation in the traditional sense; Gen1Recomp is a recreation of the game's original code in a native cross-platform engine.
