Multiple Wellington schools in lockdown due to potential sighting of 'person of interest'

Several north Wellington schools went into lockdown this morning due to police responding to a potential sighting of a person of interest nearby. The schools were in lockdown for about an hour on Friday, with police saying cordons had been in place on Bannister Ave, near Alex Moore Park, and nearby schools were advised to lockdown as a precaution.Shortly before 12pm the lockdown was lifted.Onslow College, St Brigid's School, Johnsonville School and Raroa Normal Intermediate earlier advised parents to avoid the area and not to try to pick up students.St Brigid's said: "Please do not come to the school or phone the school as you will not be attended to and this may cause disruption to the management of this incident and could potentially place yourselves and/or our staff and student's safety at risk."This message was similar to other schools' announcements. The school later said: "Everyone did extremely well and responded to instructions. I would like to personally thank you for your support during this uncertain time."In a message on its website Onslow College urged parents not to come to the school or phone "as you will not be attended to and this may cause disruption to the management of this incident and could potentially place yourselves and/or our staff and student's safety at risk".Poilce have been contacted for additional comment.
