MTG Designer Confirms Harry Potter Set Is "Very Unlikely"

Magic: The Gathering has released several well-received Universes Beyond crossovers since the product debuted in 2020. Since then, one IP has been requested many times, and questions keep coming up about whether it could become a Universes Beyond product: Harry Potter. While fielding questions from fans over on his Blogatog, head designer of MTG Mark Rosewater finally fielded a question directly asking whether a Harry Potter Universes Beyond set was possible, and his response was short, simple, and clear: "very unlikely." No Harry Potter x MTG Crossover, For Now As clear as Rosewater's response is at the moment, it also leaves Wizards of the Coast some wiggle room in the future, but we have to imagine that Harry Potter is somewhat of a poisoned chalice right now due to the relentless hateful controversies associated with its creator. HBO's upcoming series has faced a lot of backlash, with actors who are announced for the project often becoming the target of abuse, and it's a cycle that never seems to end with the Harry Potter franchise in general. For Wizards of the Coast to plan a Harry Potter Universes Beyond set, it would have to be willing to fight through such backlash, knowingly doing a 'deal with the devil,' so to speak, which would be extremely harmful to its otherwise welcoming and inclusive community. It's worth noting that, at the time of writing, there are 217 comments on this particular blog post, and the vast majority of them are supportive of the response and, in turn, Wizards of the Coast's current stance. Those among us who are old enough will also remember that a Harry Potter TCG did exist between 2001 and 2003, designed and distributed by Wizards of the Coast, but despite the popularity of the books and movies, the TCG couldn't keep up. The most recent Harry Potter collectible card product, Always, was released by Panini this year. Universes Beyond Reveal Coming At New York Comic Con While Universes Beyond is a major talking point, it's also worth pointing out that we now know when the first Universes Beyond set of 2027 is going to be revealed. On the panel page for the event, there is a teaser that all but confirms that a Universes Beyond set will be revealed during the event on Friday, October 9. We already know the three in-universe MTG 2027 sets thanks to their reveals at MagicCon Amsterdam. We still have three Universes Beyond sets to come, though, but we only expect to learn about one during this panel, and it's incredibly likely that it will be the Marvel-themed set for the year. Given that it's no secret that there will be at least five Marvel MTG sets to complete the Infinity Stone collection, we're expecting one Marvel set per year between 2027 and 2029. Rumors suggest that an X-Men set is likely, given that many of the heroes and villains from the property were missing from the main Marvel Super Heroes set. Fans are also hopeful of a horror-themed Marvel set, as well as Guardians of the Galaxy or more niche groups like the Midnight Suns or Marvel Knights. I personally would be fine with a horror-adjacent set or X-Men, but given that we know there won't be any smaller sets in 2027, it feels like a stretch to expect any of those other requests to fill out an entire set.
