Monsoon firing on all cylinders: East India to be drenched this week

(Photo: Windy)The southwest monsoon is showing no signs of slowing down, with meteorologists predicting no major break in rainfall over the next few days as fresh weather systems begin developing over eastern India even before the remnants of the previous depression have dissipated.Satellite imagery indicates that while the weakening remnant of the recent monsoon depression continues to linger over parts of northwest India and Pakistan, a broad zone of deep convection has already become active over eastern India and the Bay of Bengal.The rapid succession of weather systems is expected to keep the monsoon circulation vigorous across much of the country. The latest satellite images show dense cloud bands stretching across Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal, Odisha and adjoining regions, signalling renewed thunderstorm activity. Weather experts say this transition from one monsoon system to another means rainfall will continue uninterrupted across large parts of the country.Before the depression remnant could dissipate, eastern India has already become active, ensuring there will be no significant break in rainfall over the coming days. The active monsoon phase comes after an intense depression dumped exceptionally heavy rainfall over Gujarat, Maharashtra and parts of central India over the past week, causing flooding in several districts. As that system weakens, the monsoon trough is expected to remain active, allowing moisture-laden winds from the Bay of Bengal to fuel fresh spells of rain over eastern and central India.Forecast models indicate widespread light to moderate rainfall with isolated heavy showers across eastern India, while central India is also likely to receive intermittent rain as the monsoon axis remains favourably positioned.The uninterrupted rainfall is good news for agriculture, particularly for kharif crops that depend on regular monsoon showers during August.
