Inter-State, long distance buses to halt at terminals outside city soon

The State government is working on a system to connect the proposed terminals with the city through RTC buses, Metro Rail and MMTS. | Photo Credit: RAMAKRISHNA G The Telangana government is planning a series of measures to reduce vehicular congestion within the city, restrict entry of long-distance buses, both private and public, and provide last mile connectivity, by setting up four bus terminals around Hyderabad.Minister for Transport Ponnam Prabhakar on Tuesday (September 15) said that efforts are under way to have the proposed bus terminals at Gajulararam, Shamshabad, L.B. Nagar and Ghatkesar. The government is also studying the availability of land for these projects. While approximately a 100-acre land parcel is being considered at Gajulararam, another land parcel around 150 acres in size is near Shamshabad, he said.According to Mr. Prabhakar, the steps will lead to easing of traffic congestion. It will also reduce vehicular pollution, among other things by the large number of buses entering and being parked in the city.According to the proposed system, buses from States neighbouring Telangana such as Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Maharashtra, besides those entering Hyderabad through the Outer Ring Road, would be made to halt at these terminals on the respective sides of the city instead of being allowed into the inner city.The government is working on a system to connect the proposed terminals with the city through RTC buses, Metro Rail and MMTS. Passengers arriving on long-distance and inter-district services would be able to continue their journey using these modes of transport.The proposal is also expected to bring private bus operators under a terminal-based system. Mr. Prabhakar said private buses were being parked indiscriminately at several places in the city and their movement, particularly at night, was adding to traffic congestion and pollution.“The government is examining a system under which private buses would operate from designated terminals and pay user charges for the facilities,” he said.The terminals are proposed to have passenger waiting areas, parking facilities and connections to other modes of public transport. The government intends to develop them keeping in mind the city’s future transport requirements, the Minister said.The proposed changes are also being planned alongside the induction of 2,200 electric buses into Hyderabad’s public transport system. The buses would be deployed on routes connecting the terminals with different parts of the city, Mr. Prabhakar said.A terminal-based system would reduce the number of long distance buses entering the city while providing passengers with alternatives to reach their destinations, he said.
