ONE of Vladimir Putin’s allies has urged him – in public – to “freeze” the war in Ukraine. Giving advice, Tokayev was referring to the negotiations held between Russia and Ukraine in Turkey last year. At the time, the core concepts included locking in a ceasefire along the current lines of territorial control, and long-term security provisions backed by major global powers. Putin did not respond to his ally’s appeal, but this comes the very same week that Volodymyr Zelensky said that a “ceasefire” would be “better” than a prolonged war. The Ukrainian President told US commentator Laura Loomer: “If tomorrow we can stop the war to make a ceasefire, it’s better than to fight 10-20 years for victory and to lose your people.” He added that Ukraine has not abandoned its goal of “victory” but that it is “focusing on the human lives.” Zelensky is due to meet Donald Trump in the White House next week amid the diplomatic push to end the bloodshed. Efforts have remained stalled. But Zelensky said he had spoken with US special envoy Steve Witkoff and Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner in an attempt to restart negotiations. Comment now
