In reality, Cayenne-Tonge smashed into Mr Darmody, who died just over two weeks later in hospital, as he was crossing the street on May 11 last year. Sign up for The Sun newsletter Thank you! Osman James was handed a suspended prison sentence and told to complete 150 hours of unpaid work. In police bodycam footage – released by the CPS – filmed moments after the crash, Cayenne-Tonge, who stopped at the scene, can be heard telling a police officer that a white Golf hit Mr Darmody. He went on to claim the car “drove off” towards Sydenham Road after the crash, before giving his details to the officer. Most read in The Sun Mr Darmody’s granddaughter, Martina Coady, branded the killer “cruel and callous” for lying to police. She told The Sun: “We were informed from very early on that the driver had lied and left the scene. “It was an immoral act. And then to continue to lie when questioned just told us that Kamal was a cruel, callous individual who felt no remorse for my grandfather. “When I spoke to my grandfather in hospital and told him that the fella had left him on the road and lied to the police, his words were ‘well he must be no good, girl’.“ He was jailed for 12 years Credit: MET Police She was given a suspended sentence Credit: Supplied – Matthew Dresch Her family decided to share the footage of the crash to show the impact one man’s ego – in this case Cayenne-Tonge’s – can have on innocent people. She added: “My grandfather was one step away from still being here today. He followed all the correct procedures to cross the road using a pedestrian refuge but still this car was speeding and overtook on the wrong side of the road. “I want people to see and understand the devastating effect one man’s ego can have on others – all to ‘win’ a race or not wanting to lose face.” The CCTV shows Cayenne-Tonge attempting to overtake a white Golf by racing down the wrong side of the road. As he approaches Mr Darmody, the screeching sound of his brakes being applied can be heard on the video. Analysis of CCTV footage revealed Cayenne-Tonge, of Scarlet Road, Catford, had been driving at three times the 20mph speed limit in the run-up to the crash. Neshay’s defence team said she had simply made a “terrible misjudgement” to support her brother-in-law. Ms Coady emailed Lewisham Council in the aftermath of the smash calling for cameras or other anti-speeding measures to be set up on Kent House Road. However, she has still not heard back from the local authority, despite a spokesman previously saying they would like to speak with the family. She told The Sun: “If there had been some speed deterrents put into place then he may have found it difficult to have been able to get his vehicle up to high speed it was travelling before colliding with my grandfather.” The 36-year-old previously paid tribute to her grandad, branding him her “hero” and describing him as previously healthy, sharp as a nail and seemingly invincible even at 89. She said: “This was avoidable. He didn’t have to die this way and he didn’t deserve to.”
