She has nearly a decade of professional experience in writing entertainment articles about a wide range of topics, including movies, television, music, anime, streaming, and more. Bong Joon Ho’s sci-fi masterpiece is getting a restoration upgrade. Bong is a visionary filmmaker who has dominated many movie genres. Before winning multiple Academy Awards for 2019’s Parasite, the South Korean director first gained recognition for hit sci-fi movies, which are not only known for their thriller elements but also popular because of their social commentary. One of these films is 2006’s monster film The Host, which is officially returning to North American theaters very soon. For its 20th anniversary, Magnolia Pictures has announced that the remastered version of The Host is finally scheduled to premiere in theaters on November 20, 2026. It is set to arrive in a stunning new 4K restoration, which will include an exclusive conversation with Bong. Magnolia Pictures also shared a video of the acclaimed filmmaker, expressing his delight about the upcoming re-release. The 2006 creature feature was Bong’s first venture into the sci-fi genre, which he then followed up with 2013’s Snowpiercer and 2025’s Mickey 17, which each tell a different dystopian future. Bong Joon Ho: I’m also very glad that the 4K remastered version of the film will be playing in North American theaters, which will provide higher visual quality. 20 years may have passed, but I believe the human emotions that well up in the film remain as relevant as ever. And I hope the audience feels those emotions as well. The Host follows clumsy snack-stand vendor Gang-du and his dysfunctional family as they get caught in the middle of a monster attack on the Han River. When the mysterious creature suddenly grabs hold of his daughter, he and the rest of his family will stop at nothing to rescue her from the terrifying clutches of a mutated amphibious monster, which is the result of military negligence. Bong directed and co-wrote the screenplay with Ha Joon-won and Baek Chul-hyun. The cast features Song Kang-ho as Gang-du, Byun Hee-bong as Heebong, Park Hae-il as Nam-il, Bae Doona as Nam-jo, and Go Ah-sung as Hyun-seo. The state-of-the-art special effects were brought to life through a creative partnership between Weta Workshop (King Kong, The Lord of the Rings) and The Orphanage (Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, Sin City). Two decades later, the R-rated sci-fi film has maintained its fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes and is considered one of the best monster movies of all time. Bong prepares for his next major project with Neon, which is an animated movie titled Ally. The story centers on a curious pig squid’s journey from the ocean’s uncharted depths to the surface. The award-winning filmmaker has been developing the feature since 2019, following the critical and commercial success of Parasite. The star-studded cast includes Bradley Cooper, Ayo Edebiri, Dave Bautista, Finn Wolfhard, and Werner Herzog. Bong’s first animated feature is currently expected to debut in 2027. Bong has also previously teased his next horror movie, which he described as his “life project.” Further details about its development status and potential release date haven’t been unveiled yet, but the story will take place in Seoul, Korea, in an “underground section of the subway.” While waiting for Bong’s new movie, The Host will come out in theaters on November 20, 2026.
