Marvel unveils a new Hulk who flips the dynamics between Bruce Banner and his rage-fueled gamma monster. Although the Hulk is born from both a unique mix of a military bomb test and Bruce Banner's childhood trauma, there's a permanently increasing number of gamma mutates in the Marvel Universe. Characters like Doc Samson, She-Hulk, the Leader, and Red Hulk unlocked their gamma transformations through different means, including thorough experimentation and blood transfusions. Since gamma radiation doesn't possess a uniform evolutionary blueprint, these characters largely escape the tragic dual-personality torment that makes Bruce Banner's life a living hell. Gamma characters have a huge advantage over other Marvel heavyweights since they owe their unparalleled strength to an infinite energy reserve. They heal incredibly fast, have endless endurance, and increase their strength according to the situation. For example, She-Hulk was once able to bite chunks out of a Celestial's armor even though she struggles against regular foes in events like Civil War. Gamma mutates are also linked to the Below-Place, which allows them to cheat death in the rare cases where their bodies are destroyed. As shown by characters like the Lizard, Revenant, and Spider-Man's Man-Spider form, there are other transformations that could rival the Hulk's. Marvel Introduces A New Type Of Hulk, With A Tragically Addictive Twist The Punisher Showdowns: Wolverine #1; Written By Tom Waltz; Art By Bruno Büll, Wayne Faucher, And Marcio Menyz Marvel's second installment in the Punisher Showdowns series of oversized one-shot comics, The Punisher Showdowns: Wolverine, pits the two titular heroes against the Yakuza, who have been dealing with a new synthetic drug called "Shinrai". Shinrai comes in the form of a red lightning-shaped pill, which numbs all pain receptors, enhances the user's strength and endurance, and gives them a flaming head. While fighting Wolverine and the Punisher, the mob's boss, Kumo Kenji, falls into a vat of Shinrai and comes out fully transformed into a Hulk-like monster with sharp claws, hog-like fangs, and a Ghost Rider-like, Ultimate Green Goblin-like flaming head. Kumo Kenji's Hulk-like transformation isn't directly connected to Bruce Banner or any of Marvel's gamma monsters, but he puts a fresh twist on the classic Bruce Banner and Hulk dynamics. Where Banner is perpetually tormented by the physical manifestation of his repressed trauma, Kumo Kenji and his henchmen display an addictive behavior towards their own drug. Instead of the dormant rage aching to come out, Kenji's transformation is the embodiment of pleasure and addiction, the complete opposite of the Hulk's nature. Unfortunately, Kenji and his people are promptly defeated by the Punisher and Wolverine, but the concept of Shinrai is still compelling for future storylines. Marvel Needs A New Type Of Hulk Not All Hulk-Like Characters Need To Be Gamma Mutates The constant influx of gamma-powered characters in the Marvel Universe has oversaturated Marvel's cosmic and street-level scenes. After the titular possessed gamma mutate's takeover in The Infernal Hulk and the fallout of Red Hulk's global attack in Armageddon, Marvel may need a change of pace when it comes to Hulk's stories. But instead of purging Hulk's existing roster of gamma-irradiated heroes and villains, Marvel could revitalize the Green Goliath's mythos with the introduction of new types of ultra-strong, Hulk-like monsters who derive their strength from unrelated sources. Some of Hulk's most memorable physical slugfests have occurred against non-gamma forces of nature like the unstoppable Juggernaut, powered by the Crimson Gem of Cyttorak; Rhino, powered by his armor or hide; Hercules, fueled by his divine mythological might, and the Thing, capable of trading blows with the Hulk due to his cosmic-ray stone skin. Though their battles are based almost entirely around sheer physical strength, they visibly stand apart from gamma-powered foes like Red Hulk, Abomination, Maestro, and Devil Hulk. The Shinrai-mutated Yakuza only need a durability enhancement in order to become an exciting new threat to Hulk and his gamma family. Would you like to see Shinrai return?
