Here's what the hero is now called, and why Marvel has made the change. Debuting in 1990, Gambit was one of the decade's big success story, becoming an iconic part of X-Men lore. Known for his ability to charge inanimate objects with explosive energy, Gambit is a professional thief with a dark past he's trying to atone for. Always a fan favorite, Gambit has been getting more buzz following confirmation that Channing Tatum's version of the character (introduced in Deadpool & Wolverine) will appear in Avengers: Doomsday, battling Doctor Doom and the reality-threatening Incursions. However, in the comics, he's undergoing an even more personal struggle... X-Men's Gambit Just Became 'Wyvern' In yesterday's Uncanny X-Men #32 - from Gail Simone, Jim Towe, Rogê Antônio, Federica Mancin, Matt Wilson and Clayton Cowles - Gambit transformed into a draconic new form, declaring his new codename is 'Wyvern.' In recent comics, Gambit stole a cursed artifact from the ancient dragon Sadurang. While the treasure has given the X-Men hero new abilities including teleportation, it's also started to transform him into a monster. When aliens attack in Uncanny X-Men #32, Gambit transforms into a Wyvern to fight back. While Wyvern is crucial to repelling the invaders, the curse is still a huge threat. Gambit has been feeling cannibalistic urges lately, with Sadurang informing him that as he transforms further, he'll be compelled to kill those he loves, including his wife Rogue and the young mutants under his charge. Up until now, Gambit has been trying to persuade himself and Rogue that he has the curse under control. However, after becoming a literal monster, he and Rogue leave their team behind (in the hands of new leaders Monet and Quicksilver) to find an exorcist who can save Gambit. Gambit's Transformation Will Introduce New X-Men Character Repent While the identity of that exorcist isn't given in the issue, Marvel's marketing has already revealed it's new character Repent, aka the X-Orcist. Little is known about this new hero, however he appears to be able to manifest constructs made of light and may even be a mutant vampire. With future comic covers showing Gambit submitting even more to the deadly curse (see below), it's clear that the fight for his soul won't be an easy one. Worryingly, Gambit's dragon transformation mirrors his ongoing storyline in the animated X-Men '97, which is adapting his transformation into Apocalypse's Horseman of Death. If the two are intended to promote synergy between properties, then comic Gambit may be approaching a full-blown villain era, as his transformation into Wyvern threatens everyone he holds dear. Indeed, Channing Tatum's Avengers: Doomsday appearance could also spell doom, since Marvel has a habit of killing off characters so it can bring them back with fanfare around their big-screen appearances. X-Men's Gambit just became the monstrous Wyvern, as a cursed artifact puts his humanity and life at risk, albeit while providing him with a genuinely awesome new transformation.
