At trial, prosecutors alleged Lucy would create “crisis situations” to gain his sympathy. Her supporters later turned on him because he said in court that she might have “manipulated” him. The married registrar – known as Doctor A – previously gave evidence against Letby during her trial for the murder of seven babies and the attempted murder of seven others. It is understood the medic – who was in his 50s – had been ill before passing away last month. Prosecutors alleged Letby was infatuated with the physician and would create “crisis situations” by attacking infants to ensure he would be bleeped to attend. Although the pair exchanged 1,300 messages and enjoyed day trips to London, Letby denied a romance and insisted they were simply “trusted friends”.
