THE son of Manchester United legend Mark Hughes died tragically from sudden adult death syndrome, an inquest heard. The inquest was told that Alex’s eldest son carried out CPR on his dad but he sadly died. Cheshire Coroners Court was told that medics put down the cause of death to sudden adult death syndrome. Area coroner Victoria Davies gave the cause of death as sudden adult death syndrome and also concluded that the death was down to natural causes. Two-times Premier League winner Mark Hughes, 62, said his family was “totally heartbroken” by Alex’s sudden death on June 19. Legendary football manager Sir Alex Ferguson led mourners as footballing figures packed into St Peter’s Church in Prestbury, Cheshire, to pay tribute last month. Most read in Sport United greats Bryan Robson and Ryan Giggs were in attendance, as well as ex-coach Mike Phelan and former chairman Martin Edwards. Alex left behind his wife Jess – who he met at school when they were teenagers – and their children, Sebastian and Leonardo. Born in 1987 while Mark was contracted to Barcelona, Alex went on to have a brief spell as a footballer in Wales. He then moved into a variety of behind-the-scenes roles and earned his stripes as a match analyst at Blackburn. Manchester City then took him on as a scout, going on to work as chief analyst at another of his dad’s former clubs, Fulham. Alex later forged his own path with advisory roles at 1860 Munich and Reading. In 2024, he took over as director of football at AFC Fylde before returning to prominent scouting roles at Morecambe and Grimsby.
