Man shot after female police officer stabbed in the neck during confrontation in Australia

A female police officer was stabbed in the neck and her alleged attacker shot in the leg during a daylight confrontation on a busy road in Adelaide, Australian police have said. Officers were called to reports of a man running along Main North Road in Elizabeth East in the northern suburbs of the South Australian city, armed with a knife at about 11am on Wednesday. As they moved to confront him, a female officer was stabbed in the neck and the 27-year-old suspect was shot in the leg by the police.Both were taken to the hospital. The officer's injuries were serious but not life-threatening, South Australia Police said. The man's injuries were also not thought to be life-threatening. He remained in hospital under police guard.The man, from the suburb of Woodville Gardens, was expected to face serious charges. He was not previously known to police.David O'Donovan, an acting assistant commissioner with South Australia Police, praised the response of first responders and said the force was supporting the wounded officer. "During the confrontation a police officer was stabbed in the neck," he said. "We are providing appropriate support for her colleagues and of course for her family."Mr O'Donovan said officers had faced a fast-moving and dangerous situation. "The response by police this morning was a swift response, and they responded to what was clearly an evolving and very rapidly dangerous situation," he said. "Their actions today were in response to an immediate threat posed by an armed individual."He said the sequence of events would form part of an investigation and that officers would speak to the suspect at the earliest opportunity. "He has allegedly stabbed a police officer, so he will be facing some very serious charges," he said.Major crime detectives and internal investigators were examining the incident, and a southbound stretch of Main North Road was closed from Midway Road while they worked. At least a dozen police cars were at the scene, local media reported, with an area cordoned off near the Playford City Tennis Centre. Police said there was no ongoing threat to the public and appealed for witnesses, particularly drivers with dashcam footage, to come forward.A local resident, Beverley Lock, said she had become aware of the incident after her son returned from walking her dog. "There were about 30 police cars," she told ABC News. "We were just alarmed by the number of police cars and lights and sirens going. It was very concerning." She said it was frightening to learn an officer had been stabbed. "My heart goes out to the police officer just trying to do their job," she said. "Nobody's life should be at risk for trying to help their community."South Australian premier, Peter Malinauskas, said his thoughts were with the injured officer. "On behalf of all South Australians, I thank her for her bravery, and I wish her a full and speedy recovery," he said in a statement. "I also extend my sincere thoughts to her family and police colleagues."
