Major incident declared & homes evacuated as inferno erupts at showroom next to train tracks

A MAJOR incident has been declared and homes have been evacuated after an inferno erupted at a bathroom showroom next to train tracks. Fire crews, 10 engines and specialist vehicles raced to the scene just after 6am near Luton aiprort, where they continue to battle the blaze. Nearby residents vacated their homes as locals are urged to keep their windows and doors shut due to plumes of smoke. Four junctions near Selbourne Road remain closed as the fire service warned people in the area may experience low water pressure or no water. A spokesperson for Bedfordshire Fire and Rescue Service said: “Crews have surrounded the fire and are using water jets to apply large amounts of water to tackle and contain it. “Currently on scene we have 10 fire engines, three aerial platforms to tackle the fire from above, two water carriers and an incident command unit. “Residents affected by smoke in the area are encouraged to keep their windows and doors closed.” They added: “Firefighters have worked incredibly hard in challenging circumstances to extinguish the fire and it is anticipated the fire service will be on scene for the rest of the day. “All people are accounted for. The blaze this morning has closed lines and caused dozens of delays as South Western Railway trains sit idle in Waterloo station. Both infernos come after millions of phones blasted an emergency alert last night warning Brits of the high risk of wildfires. The government issued the alert warning people “not to light anything that could spark a fire, including barbecues, campfires, and fireworks” with the country in the middle of another heatwave. Prime Minister Andy Burnham said that the request “came directly from Fire and Rescue Services” as wildfires and blazes have swept the country in recent weeks. The surge in fires came as the UK officially broke its 2026 record for the hottest day, with the mercury hitting 38.5C in Kew Gardens, London. A total of 19 homes were completely destroyed and 18 others damaged as families forced to evacuate as the fire spread across Stourbridge, West Midlands, Thursday afternoon.
