Sign in to your TheGamer account A much darker Mafia 2 ending that was cut from the final version of the game has been found and restored thanks to the recent Steam leak. As you’ve no doubt heard by now, Steam was recently hit with a massive leak that caused 12 TB worth of data from hundreds of games to be mined and made public. While nothing too groundbreaking (by which I mean, related to Half-Life 3) has been found so far, there have been lots of neat discoveries found in earlier versions of lots of titles. Outside of a beta version of GLaDOS that the internet is doing its usual thing with, in my opinion the most interesting thing to come from the Steam leak so far has nothing to do with a Valve game. Instead, it’s a beta version of Mafia 2 that finally lets us see the game’s original, much more depressing ending in all its glory. Mafia 2 Originally Had An Even Sadder Ending A Far Less Ambiguous End To Vito And Joe Anyone who has played Mafia 2 will remember that the game’s ending sees Vito and Joe being driven off in different cars. Leo Galante implies Vito has been saved, but that Joe wasn’t part of the deal, leaving his fate up in the air and ending the whole game on a very sour note that’s only made better by Vito’s survival. As it turns out, though, the original version of Mafia 2 was going to end in a much more depressing way for everyone involved. A beta version of Mafia 2 has been found in the Steam leak, and it includes a nearly finished version of this ending that was shown off by YouTuber Sliderv2. In this version of the game’s finale, Vito and Joe still get in different cars. This time around, though, when Vito asks about Joe and gets told he wasn’t part of the deal, one of Leo’s crew pulls a gun on Vito and the camera cuts away as several shots are heard. The implication here is that Leo has dealt with Vito himself instead of letting him get tortured. While there’s a chance that Vito survived the encounter in this darker ending, it’s clearly meant to be a more sobering and final end to the character than what we got. Sad endings are the norm for Mafia games, but I’m very glad the final game at least confirmed Vito was kept alive, even if Joe’s survival was eventually revealed as well.
