Luke Guth Appreciation: A Dominant Slider and an Unforgettable Run

Guth’s sophomore campaign was about as close to perfect as a relief pitcher can get. He allowed only two earned runs all season, finished with a 0.93 ERA and became one of Tim Corbin’s most dependable options out of the bullpen. Then, with an SEC Tournament championship hanging in the balance, Vanderbilt handed him the baseball. Guth delivered. That performance in Hoover will remain the defining moment of his Vanderbilt career. Now, the right-hander will have an opportunity to create more of them in professional baseball. The Chicago Cubs selected Guth in the 19th round with the 577th overall pick in the 2026 MLB Draft. He signed with the organization on July 27 and was assigned to the Arizona Complex League Cubs. As a Cardinals fan, I cannot promise to start pulling for the Cubs. I can, however, make an exception for Luke Guth. Finding His Place on the Mound Guth arrived at Vanderbilt from Franklin, Pennsylvania, as an impressive all-around athlete. During his junior season at Franklin Area High School, he went 6-1 with a 1.17 ERA and 129 strikeouts while also hitting .435 with 11 doubles and three triples. Perfect Game ranked him as the No. 2 infielder in Pennsylvania, but his future at Vanderbilt would ultimately be on the mound. Guth made his collegiate debut against Middle Tennessee on April 9, 2024, striking out three of the first four hitters he faced. Despite not debuting until nearly two months into the season, he worked his way into 12 games and threw 18.1 innings as a freshman. He finished the year with 20 strikeouts and held opposing hitters to a .224 batting average. One of his best appearances came on the road against No. 3 Texas A&M, where he provided two scoreless innings in one of college baseball’s most difficult environments. It was a solid beginning, but his sophomore season would reveal just how effective Guth could be. A Nearly Untouchable Sophomore Season Guth became one of the most reliable arms in Vanderbilt’s bullpen in 2025. He made 19 appearances and did not allow an earned run in 18 of them. Across 19.1 innings, opponents recorded only nine hits and managed a .141 batting average against him. Guth struck out 22 batters, walked seven and did not surrender a home run. His final numbers included a perfect 4-0 record and a 0.93 ERA. He also ended the season with 6.1 consecutive scoreless innings. Those statistics are remarkable on their own, but Guth’s value extended beyond simply preventing runs. Corbin and pitching coach Scott Brown trusted him in difficult situations, frequently calling upon him with runners already on base or a close game threatening to turn. Guth possessed the calm temperament needed for those moments. He never appeared overwhelmed by the traffic around him. He attacked hitters, relied upon the movement of his pitches and found ways to escape innings before they unraveled. His first victory of the season came at Tennessee in May. Vanderbilt needed five pitchers to finish a 10-6 road victory, and Guth helped steady the game as the Commodores evened the series against the Volunteers. That win began a memorable final stretch. Guth would receive three more winning decisions before the season ended, including one Vanderbilt fans will remember for a long time. Delivering an SEC Championship Vanderbilt met Ole Miss in the 2025 SEC Tournament championship game after allowing only two runs over its first two games in Hoover. The Commodores carried a 2-0 lead into the fifth inning, but the Rebels began threatening against Austin Nye and Miller Green. Ole Miss pushed one run across and placed runners on the corners with two outs. The tying run stood 90 feet away. Corbin turned to Guth. Guth induced a flyout to escape the inning and preserve Vanderbilt’s lead. Jacob Humphrey immediately restored the two-run advantage with a solo home run in the bottom half, but Guth still had work to do. He remained on the mound and ultimately delivered 1.2 scoreless innings. Guth did not allow a hit, struck out three batters and kept the Commodores in front before handing the ball to Levi Huesman and Sawyer Hawks. Vanderbilt held on for a 3-2 victory, securing the fifth SEC Tournament championship in program history. Guth was credited with the win, completing his perfect 4-0 sophomore record with the biggest victory of his career. It was the ideal conclusion to a nearly flawless season. Relief pitchers do not always receive the same recognition as starters or closers. Their most important contributions can come in the fifth, sixth or seventh inning, long before the final out appears on a highlight reel. Guth’s performance against Ole Miss demonstrated how valuable those innings can be. Vanderbilt needed someone to stop the momentum, strand the tying run and bridge the game to the back of its bullpen. Guth did all three. When He Was On, He Was On Guth’s junior season did not match the statistical brilliance of his sophomore campaign, but Vanderbilt asked considerably more of him. He tied for the team lead with 23 appearances while establishing career highs with 33 innings and 40 strikeouts. The results were occasionally uneven, but when Guth was on, he was on. His slider generated the seventh-most whiffs of any individual pitch in college baseball during the 2026 season. At its best, it gave Guth a legitimate out pitch capable of overwhelming even the strongest opposing lineups. No weekend demonstrated that better than Vanderbilt’s series against No. 4 Texas. Guth entered Saturday’s game with Vanderbilt protecting a lead and delivered 2.1 scoreless innings, allowing only one hit while striking out four. His performance helped the Commodores defeat the Longhorns 6-0 and hand Texas its first shutout of the season. He returned to the mound the following afternoon and struck out two more hitters during two-thirds of a scoreless inning. Across his two appearances that weekend, Guth held Texas scoreless on one hit over three innings and struck out six of the 11 batters he faced. Against one of the best teams in the country, Guth showed exactly how dominant his arsenal could be. The advanced numbers provide a better picture of his overall contribution. Guth produced 6.70 pitching runs above replacement and 0.49 pitching WAR, finishing with 0.59 total WAR. He also recorded 1.26 defensive runs saved, adding value beyond what appeared in his traditional pitching line. There were outings when his command escaped him and innings that did not unfold as he wanted. Still, the swing-and-miss ability never disappeared. His increased workload, career-high strikeout total, dominant slider and performances against Texas gave professional organizations plenty of reasons to believe his best baseball remained ahead of him. Leaving His Mark on West End Across three seasons at Vanderbilt, Guth made 54 appearances and threw 70.2 innings. He finished with a 7-3 record, a 4.08 ERA and 82 strikeouts. Those career totals provide a useful summary, but they do not fully capture his place in Vanderbilt baseball history. Guth was a key contributor to Vanderbilt’s 2025 SEC Tournament championship, authoring one of the best relief seasons by a Commodore in recent memory and earning the victory in the conference championship game. That is a legacy worth celebrating. What I will remember most is the confidence I felt when Guth entered a game during that sophomore season. No matter the situation or how many runners were already on base, it seemed as though Vanderbilt had found the right pitcher to escape it. Guth repeatedly rewarded that trust and saved his most important performance for the biggest game of the season. His junior year was different, but it offered another reason to appreciate him. It showed the pure dominance Guth was capable of producing when everything clicked. The slider could be unhittable, the strikeouts could pile up quickly and even a lineup as talented as Texas could struggle to put together a competitive at-bat against him. The Next Opportunity After his final season at Vanderbilt, Guth made one appearance for the Mahoning Valley Scrappers in the MLB Draft League. He allowed one earned run and only one hit over three innings while striking out three. The Cubs subsequently selected him in the 19th round. Guth brings a fastball that generally works in the low-to-mid 90s, along with multiple breaking pitches and the swing-and-miss slider that became one of the most effective individual pitches in college baseball during his final season. His experience in high-leverage situations, athletic background and proven ability to miss bats provide an intriguing foundation for professional development. Guth has already shown how dominant he can be when his command and arsenal come together. The Cubs are betting they can help him produce that version of himself more consistently. Congratulations to Luke on being drafted, signing with the Cubs and beginning his professional career. It was a pleasure watching him pitch over the last three seasons. Vanderbilt fans will remember the nearly untouchable sophomore campaign, the devastating slider, the dominant weekend against Texas and, most importantly, the day Guth helped bring another SEC championship back to West End.
