London crowned best city in Europe for nightlife - as Night Tube clinches the win

London has been crowned the number one capital in Europe for nightlife and public transport, according to a new report by TfL and Time Out. The London After Dark report analysed 5,848 responses across 26 European capitals, with each city given a combined score based on the quality of its night-life and its public transport offerings. While Paris ranked higher in nightlife by almost six percentage points, it was London’s transport that got the UK capital over the line. London’s transport - providing an easy journey home after a night out - was second only to Vienna, which led the European rankings and scored 6.4 percentage points above London. However, the UK capital still managed to claim first spot overall, with Vienna and Paris following in second and third place respectively. Spain’s Madrid came in fourth place, while Sofia in Bulgaria made up the last of the top five. Some of the late-night hotspots in the capital include Dalston, Shoreditch, Brixton, Camden, Vauxhall, and Clapham, according to TfL passenger data. Londoners were also found to seek a wider range of experiences after dark, with a rise in restaurants, theatre, live music, and cultural activities than previously. When looking across at other European cities, Travel Editor at Time Out, Grace Beard, suggested that London could learn a thing or two from its counterparts. Paris and Madrid both scored well for affordability, while Germany is making efforts to reclassify clubs as cultural institutions to protect its nightlife. The report also highlighted how crucial public transport is in supporting the night time economy. As many as 88% of 200 Londoners surveyed said they had stayed out later because they knew public transport was running, while 77% of Londoners said knowing how to get home was an important factor when deciding where to go.
