I was screaming on the road: Kareena Kapoor on night Saif Ali Khan was stabbed

Actor Kareena Kapoor has recalled running onto a Mumbai road in her night T-shirt and desperately trying to hail an autorickshaw after her husband, actor Saif Ali Khan, was stabbed at their home in January 2025. Speaking on the latest episode of Koffee With Karan, she said she was screaming for vehicles to stop as Saif stood bleeding after the attack.Saif and Kareena revisited the attack, their children's reactions and its emotional impact on the family. Saif spoke about confronting the intruder to protect their younger son, Jeh, while Kareena revealed that she struggled to sleep properly for nearly six months after the incident.Recalling the chaos after the stabbing, Saif said Kareena rushed out of their home to find transport to take him to hospital. I was like, ‘Stop, stop.’ It was like a movie scene. I didn’t have the time to put on my pyjamas. I ran on the road. Nobody knows this. I am saying it for the first time.” Describing what she was wearing while trying to get an autorickshaw, she added, “I was literally in my T-shirt that was till here, and running like a mad, crazy woman trying to get a rickshaw while he was bleeding.”Saif joked that her T-shirt was extremely short and that the scene would have made quite a video. For the family, however, the night was frightening.Taimur feared for his father's life Kareena also recalled seeing the badly injured Saif inside the lift. Their son Taimur, who was present during the ordeal, asked whether his father was going to die.“I looked at Saif in the lift and, when I saw him, I was like, ‘Saif, don’t do this.’ And Tim just looked at him and said, ‘Abba, are you going to die?’ I just looked at Saif, and he gave me a look saying, ‘Take me to the hospital,’” she said.Saif said he knew he would be all right despite the severity of his injuries. He had deep, jagged cuts on his neck, while a piece of the broken knife was lodged in his back.“They were quite deep and long, like jagged cuts all over here,” he said.Recalling how the weapon broke during the attack, Saif said, “It was the worst knife in the history of knives. If it had been a slightly good knife, I would be dead. But it was such a bad knife that it broke.”Kareena said the injury could have been fatal if the knife had gone one millimetre deeper. Saif also said he had lost some sensation in his leg because the injury had affected his spine.Ibrahim was in tears after the surgeryHost Karan Johar, who was among the first people to contact the family, recalled speaking to Saif's children, Ibrahim Ali Khan and Sara Ali Khan, after the attack. He said they were deeply shaken.Saif said his family was present when he woke up after the operation. “Ibrahim was very upset, and I don’t normally see him express himself in that way. But he was in tears and feeling very angry, and wanted to defend us and catch that fellow,” he said.Karan also pointed out that Saif's composed appearance when he left hospital had prompted online speculation and several conspiracy theories. “You were so composed and elegant when you came out of hospital that it spun a different narrative online. And then there was an array of conspiracy theories, which were ridiculous,” he said.As Kareena described the theories as “bizarre”, Saif said, “But I don’t expect people not to have conspiracy theories.”Why there was no driver at homeThe couple also addressed questions about why no driver was present at their home that night. Saif said, “Because he goes home to his family in the evening. So, there is no driver.”Kareena clarified that Saif's son took him to hospital with Hari. Karan responded, “Your nine-year-old son. And taking a bleeding father I don’t know how” Saif was eventually taken to Lilavati Hospital in an autorickshaw.Saif confronted the intruder to protect JehSaif said the attacker stabbed him repeatedly as he fought to protect Jeh. “When I was fighting with this person, he stabbed me about 10 times,” he said.The actor credited his experience of watching and performing action scenes in Hindi films for his instinct to fight back. He said the situation unfolded quickly and left little time to think.“I was outraged that he was standing over my son with a knife. There was a lot of adrenaline,” Saif said.Saif said he regretted not thinking of picking up a weapon to defend his family. A decorative sword was hanging above their dining table, but he did not consider using it during the struggle. When Kareena feared that there could be more attackers and urged him to seek medical help, he decided to prioritise reaching hospital.He also recalled Jeh's response after the incident. “He gave me his plastic sword and said, ‘Next time that thief comes, use this,’” Saif said. “Jeh saw the whole thing happen, so he thinks I am a great protector.”Kareena struggled to sleep for monthsWhile Saif remained calm during the emergency, Kareena said she was completely shaken. Karan recalled that Saif continued speaking to people on the phone after the attack. “I was like, how is he even talking?” Kareena said.Kareena said she struggled to cope with what had happened and could not sleep properly for nearly six months. Although Saif recovered, the experience continued to affect the family. “It’s been the worst,” she said.Saif also spoke about the need for greater caution over security. “People in today’s world need to be careful, and a little bit of security is required because the world is slightly more unsafe than it was when we were” he said.The attack at their Mumbai homeOn 16 January 2025, an intruder entered Saif and Kareena's Mumbai residence at around 2 am. The intruder reportedly demanded Rs 1 crore and entered Jeh's room.Saif confronted the intruder to protect his son and was stabbed multiple times during the struggle, sustaining serious injuries to his neck and back.
