Leeds legend reveals why Jayden Bogle should be knocking on Daniel Farke’s door after England omission

Bogle’s team-mates Dominic Calvert-Lewin and James Trafford got the nod from Tuchel on Friday as he announced his latest squad, but there was no place for the ex-Sheffield United ace. But that would not stop former right-back Mills, a star of Leeds’ 2001 Champions League semi-finalist side, from knocking on Farke’s door. Speaking exclusively to Sun Sport via BestBettingSites.co.uk, he said: “If I’d just heard that from my manager, I’d be straight into the club for a new contract. “First and foremost – the manager thinks I should be in the England squad, then okay, pay me like an England player. I’m pretty sure Jayden Bogle will be delighted with that!” Jokes aside, Mills, who starred for the Three Lions at the 2002 World Cup, warned Bogle of the difficulties of getting into the national fold – and how it is harder to stay there. Mills, 49, said: “There are a lot of good players within that setup, and there are some good right-backs that can’t get in it. You’ve got Trent Alexander-Arnold, obviously probably the biggest name in that. They don’t often bring in other players unless they are markedly better, or there’s a huge media swell to get them in. “He plays wing-back as well, effectively, which England have tended not to do. So I don’t know if that sort of rules him out, but it makes it a little bit more difficult. “Ultimately, all he’s got to do is keep playing well for Leeds and see what happens. There have been some incredible players that have not got caps for England. Steve Bruce, probably the greatest defender that we’ve seen, never got close. “So he’s just got to keep playing well, bide his time, and see what happens.” On Tuchel ignoring Bogle, a £5m signing from Sheffield United in 2024, Farke added: “All my players with English passports that are involved are delivering good performances at the moment. But you have to do this over a mid and a long-term period, and it’s early doors in the season. “Thomas knows exactly what he needs. But if you keep delivering performances like this then everyone will also be fully aware. I’m pretty sure they’ll also have chances perhaps to be in the spotlight like Dominic or James.” After an unbeaten start, Leeds headed into the weekend sitting third. But with just five defeats in their past 29 games, talk of a European push is starting to mount. He would rather they go all out for a cup. He added: “Do you really want to be in the Conference League as a football club? Now, I understand that fans might go, ‘This is a European tour,’ and you get to go to some far-flung places. Does it benefit you as a club? “Being in the Europa League certainly does, because financially there’s a benefit. Being in the Europa Conference League is a very difficult one. You need a stronger squad, more strength and depth, you have to sign more players. “There’s then obviously the fact that you have to play Sunday and Thursday, which has always been disruptive. I don’t quite know why. We’ve seen a lot of teams struggle with having to rotate and play a lot more games because of that. “You’d almost be better off winning the Carabao Cup than winning the Europa Conference League in terms of finances for the football club. But to win the Carabao Cup, you don’t have to buy another five or six players to compete in Europe. “So as a fan – and I’m sure some of the players would like to be involved in that, it’s an opportunity to win a European competition – yes, it’s exciting. But as a club, if you’re not in the Europa League, being in the Conference League can hinder your progress, especially if it comes a little bit too soon. It’s a double-edged sword.” Comment now
