Published Oct 25, 2026, 9:30 AM EDT Laura Hurley has been writing about the entertainment industry for more than twelve years, after a decade as a content producer and editor at CinemaBlend after writing for WhatCulture and Examiner. Attending events like SCAD TVfest and San Diego Comic-Con over the course of her career, she has been immersed in the world of network, streaming, and cable TV. The weeks are counting down on NBC until Law & Order: SVU reaches a major milestone, and Mariska Hargitay is officially set for one important reunion in the 600th episode. Details about the actual storyline are still few and far between, so fans have had every reason to hope that characters even more important than Stabler could join Benson for the occasion as well. One character in particular would be a game-changer for Benson, but the odds have never seemed worse for a reunion. In season 28, Hargitay is continuing her record-setting streak by playing Captain Olivia Benson as the longest-running live-action primetime character in television history. Ice-T returned for his 27th season as Odafin Tutuola, and his episode count was originally set to address one of the show's biggest problems. The rest of the regular cast in NBC's fall 2026 schedule is filled out by Peter Scanavino as ADA Carisi, Kelli Giddish as Sergeant Rollins, Kevin Kane as Detective Bruno, Aimé Donna Kelly as Captain Curry, and Corey Cott as Detective Griffin. Despite the stacked cast for season 28, SVU recruited a major guest star for the 600th episode. After Christopher Meloni missed the 500th episode, he'll reprise his role as Elliot Stabler for the first time since Law & Order: Organized Crime was cancelled. While many fans have been clamoring for Benson and Stabler to share the screen again, Benson could really benefit more from a reunion with Rafael Barba, her former ADA. Unfortunately, Raúl Esparza's schedule might not be open enough to return as Barba, and one of Benson's most important relationships might go unaddressed in SVU's milestone season. Rafael Barba's Law & Order: SVU's Return For The 600th Episode Is Unlikely Courtesy of MovieStillsDB Raúl Esparza spent six seasons on Law & Order: SVU as Assistant District Attorney Barba, and he arguably became Benson's closest friend and confidant in the years after Stabler left her. Barba's decision to leave the job behind was a blow to Benson, and the show eventually promoted Carisi to the role of ADA as the permanent replacement for Esparza's popular character. Although he missed out on the 500th episode, he returned for another four episodes of SVU after his exit as a regular in season 19, and even guest-starred on Law & Order: Organized Crime. As it turns out, Esparza may not be able to return to SVU in season 28 for the same reason why he left back in season 19. After he stepped back as Barba and returned to Broadway for the revival of Chess in 2018, the actor will soon be back on stage to star in Galileo, a brand-new musical. Esparza is the leading man in Galileo, and Broadway productions famously usually involve eight shows a week. Even though SVU films in New York City and often features theater actors, Esparza simply may not have time to suit back up as Barba. Mariska Hargitay was only able to squeeze in her own Broadway debut over the hiatus between seasons 27 and 28. Performances of Galileo are set to begin on November 10, so it's a safe bet that Esparza not only has been very busy already this fall, but will continue to have a packed schedule for the foreseeable future. Why Barba's Return Is Vital To Benson's SVU Future Courtesy of MovieStillsDB Mariska Hargitay first became a pop culture icon as Olivia Benson during SVU's earlier seasons, when she spent her days investigating especially heinous crimes alongside Christopher Meloni's Elliot Stabler. That said, Benson didn't really grow as a character until after Stabler left, and she had to forge new connections. Barba wasn't her first bond, but he was certainly one of the strongest, and she even admitted to missing having Barba on her team during Raul Esparza's last guest-star appearance in season 23. Considering that she made this confession after their relationship took a rocky turn on Organized Crime, it was a sign that she still has strong feelings towards him. If SVU is revisiting Benson's relationship with Stabler, then the show should also showcase the bond that she built with Barba. He was in her life when she was promoted from detective to sergeant, and then from sergeant to lieutenant. If that's not enough, he was also working with Special Victims during her horrific ordeal with William Lewis. He was a key figure in a transitional time in Benson's life, and in the grand scheme of Dick Wolf's expansive TV universe, he has been a more positive influence on her than Stabler. If Benson is going to continue growing beyond 600 episodes, a return from Barba could be a strong reminder of how far she has come. The only other character who might have been able to fill that role for her would have been Don Cragen, before Cragen was killed off in the beginning of season 27. It's not impossible for Law & Order: SVU to bring Barba back for at least a cameo, if Raul Esparza's schedule permits, but fans might not want to pin their hopes on seeing him with Benson again this season.
