Landslide partially blocks Teesta, Chyakoong rivers in North Sikkim

A major landslide partially blocked the Teesta and Chyakoong rivers in North Sikkim’s Mangan district overnight, prompting authorities to alert vulnerable downstream areas.The landslide occurred above the Chyakoong River, opposite OC Bhir, during the intervening night of September 5 and 6.A large section of the hillside along the newly cut Naga–Tosa Road collapsed near the confluence of the two rivers, obstructing their flow and causing water to accumulate upstream.DOWNSTREAM ALERT ISSUEDThe Mangan district administration initially said the obstruction in the Teesta had eased and the river was flowing again, although debris continued to partially restrict both rivers. Water levels at Sankalang and Phidang were initially reported to be normal, although the water had turned muddy. Officials at both locations were directed to monitor the levels continuously.A subsequent public alert said the Teesta had crossed the danger mark at some locations following a high-flow release from the Dikchu Dam. It warned that water levels could rise further downstream. Residents along the Teesta and in low-lying areas were advised to remain vigilant, keep essential belongings and documents packed, and be prepared to evacuate if instructed. They were also asked to stay away from riverbanks and fast-flowing water.NO CASUALTIES REPORTEDNo deaths or injuries had been reported. Officials were assessing possible damage to property.Personnel from Chungthang police station and the Theng check post were monitoring the landslide site. The Police Control Room was directed to alert vulnerable settlements downstream as a precautionary measure.Officials in Singtam, Rangpo and Gangtok were also monitoring the situation. Residents were told they would be informed in advance if an evacuation became necessary.The Mangan district administration said it was closely monitoring the landslide site and the Teesta river belt.
