Landman Season 3 Can Officially Give Another Character The Demi Moore Treatment

While Billy Bob Thornton keeps it utterly watchable, Landman is far from a perfect show. There are certainly legitimate criticisms to be made of Taylor Sheridan’s hit neo-western — the whole thing is basically shameless propaganda for Big Oil — but the worst part of the show is its portrayal of women. Whereas Tommy is a wonderfully complex antihero, combining the shady criminal dealings of Walter White with the old-school Texas deadpan of Hank Hill, Landman’s female characters are seriously lacking. Ainsley and Angela are both “dumb blonde” stereotypes, Ariana is a bundle of “damsel in distress” tropes, and Rebecca rigidly adheres to the cliché of the uptight, career-focused woman who just needs to find the right man. In season 3, Landman needs to finally get better at writing its female characters. It’s not that Sheridan is incapable of writing a strong woman — just look at Lioness — but in Landman, he hasn’t bothered to do it. Take Ainsley, for example. Throughout the first two seasons, she was either relegated to distracting Tommy’s friends with her poolside manner, courting a generic love interest, or going on some Cuckoo’s Nest adventures with her elderly friends. In Landman season 3, she deserves a more interesting, original, substantial storyline. Michelle Randolph is a great actor, but she’s being given very little to do, and the same could be said of just about every woman in the Landman cast. Landman has an incredible talent at its disposal with Ali Larter — she’s a scream queen, a heartthrob, a comedian, a femme fatale, and an action hero all rolled into one — and the show is doing almost nothing with her. She’s one of the only characters who hasn’t been given a role in Tommy’s new company, and her storylines throwing themed dinners and visiting the old folks’ home have played like a sitcom. Landman Needs To Give Ali Larter The Demi Moore Treatment Demi Moore was similarly underutilized in Landman’s first season, but the second season managed to fix it. Moore plays Cami Miller, the wife of Jon Hamm’s Monty Miller, the owner of M-Tex Oil. Monty has a longstanding personal and professional relationship with Tommy, so they worked closely together all throughout season 1, while Cami was mostly relegated to a background role. In some episodes, she was a glorified extra. Monty would be talking to Tommy on the phone in the foreground, and Cami would be silently swimming laps in the pool in the background. You could’ve cast anyone to play that role, and yet Sheridan had recruited the services of one of the world’s most iconic and enduring stars. But after underutilizing Moore in season 1, Sheridan mercifully course-corrected in season 2. After Monty died of a heart attack, Cami took over ownership of M-Tex, and Moore was given a much bigger role in the show. Not only did she take Monty’s place on the business side of things; she was given plenty of emotional material to work with as Cami processed the sudden loss of her husband and wrapped her head around that grief. The scene where Cami breaks down crying upon seeing a picture of Monty finally gave Moore a chance to show off those Oscar-nominated dramatic chops. In season 3, Landman needs to give Angela the same treatment it gave Cami, and significantly expand her role and deepen her character. As it stands, Angela is stuck in a loop: she blows up at Tommy, he defuses the situation, and they make up. Maybe in season 3, she can leave him again, or stop being so forgiving, or find a way to contribute to the new family-run company — anything to make her a more substantial and interesting character.
