KBR will deliver comprehensive multidisciplinary engineering design services for the Gas Compressor Station 6 located at the West Qurna-1 oilfield. The contract was awarded by AKT Oil Services Company, which is managing the EPC project for Basrah Gas Company (BGC). To reduce emissions and lessen reliance on energy imports, the project aims to capture low-pressure associated gas that is currently flared during production at the West Qurna-1 oilfield. The gas captured from the oilfield, which has over 20 billion barrels of recoverable reserves, will be routed into the domestic energy chain. By lowering dependency on gas and power imports, the project helps Iraq achieve energy self-sufficiency. Additionally, it fortifies KBR’s four-decade foothold in the infrastructure and energy sector of Iraq. The development took place after Iraqi Deputy Prime Minister for Energy Affairs Mohsen al-Mandalawi and a delegation from US-based KBR discussed in late October the development of the country’s oil and gas sectors. According to a statement cited by the state-run Iraqi News Agency (INA), the meeting addressed prospects for joint cooperation in the oil, gas, and energy sectors, as well as leveraging the firm’s expertise to develop infrastructure and enhance the efficiency of strategic projects. According to al-Mandalawi, the government aims to implement actionable programs for the Majnoon oilfield and the recovery of associated gas at the West Qurna-1 field, as well as initiatives for ammonia production and efforts to minimize gas flaring at oil fields.
